Brazilian Petrochemical Giant Braskem Exceeds Gross Profit Expectations, Boosted by Increased Polypropylene Sales in Europe and the US
Brazilian chemical giant Braskem recently released its first-quarter financial report, attributing a significant increase in profits to the widening price spread of polyethylene (PE) in international markets and growth in polypropylene (PP) sales in Europe and North America. In the first quarter of 2025, net profit reached $113 million, reversing a loss of $967 million in the fourth quarter of 2024 and a loss of $273 million in the same period last year; revenue totaled $3.331 billion, a 1% increase quarter-over-quarter but an 8% decrease year-over-year. Adjusted earnings per share were 15 cents, far exceeding the consensus estimate of 8 cents from S&P Capital IQ. The company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reached $224 million, a 121% increase from the previous quarter (which was $102 million), with the profit margin rising from 3% in the fourth quarter to 7%.
