BMW Plans to Launch Multiple Range-Extended Models by 2026
BMW plans to launch the sixth-generation X5 extended-range version in 2026, with subsequent extended-range models of the X7 and 7 Series to follow, primarily targeting the Chinese and American markets. In fact, BMW first ventured into the extended-range market over a decade ago, with the release of the BMW i3 extended-range version in 2012. However, due to high costs and low range issues, it was not well-received in the market and was discontinued. Currently, the sales of range-extended vehicles are booming in the Chinese market, and there are also pickup models in the U.S. market that are set to offer range-extended versions. The new range extender system developed by BMW in collaboration with ZF may use the BMW B48 2.0T engine, with batteries sourced in partnership with CATL. However, the domestic mid-to-large range-extended vehicle market is already dominated by companies like Li Auto and Aito, posing challenges for BMW's re-entry. According to the vehicle database of the Gaishi Automotive Industry Big Data Platform, BMW has several models under its brand, including the 1 Series, 2 Series, and 3 Series.
