Volkswagen to revive "touareg" name, expected release in 2029

ZAKER Automotive 2025-09-18 09:45:46

Recently, it has been reported from relevant channels that Volkswagen will revive the "TOUAREG" name. The new vehicle is planned to be named Volkswagen ID. Touareg, positioned as a pure electric SUV, and built on the latest SSP pure electric platform. It is reported that the new car will be officially released in 2029.

Strictly speaking, the name "Touareg" by Volkswagen has not yet reached its "blank period," as Volkswagen plans to officially discontinue this flagship SUV in 2026. In the future, the Volkswagen Tayron L will become its successor. As the flagship SUV of the Volkswagen brand, the Touareg has undergone three generations of development over the past 20 years, consistently sharing a platform with the Porsche Cayenne.

The all-electric Porsche Cayenne is built on the PPE platform, which also includes other models such as the all-electric Porsche Macan, Audi A6 e-tron, and Audi Q6 e-tron. However, since the Volkswagen ID. Touareg will not be released until 2029, this time gap allows it to transition directly to the next-generation SSP platform architecture.

In addition to the rebooted "TOUAREG," Volkswagen has confirmed that the name "Polo" will be used for the ID.2 electric hatchback, including models like ID. Golf, ID. Tiguan, and ID. ROC, all of which are currently under development. It is worth mentioning that the original plan for Volkswagen ID. ROC was to become the first model built on the SSP platform, but based on current circumstances, its launch along with ID. Golf has been postponed to 2030. Therefore, ID. Touareg will make its debut on Volkswagen's SSP platform. For more news about the new car, CheZhiWang will continue to follow and report.
