TotalEnergies develops PLA composites for automotive and electronics applications with Benvic.
Global Polyurethane Network 2025-03-28 16:18:00

PLA producer TotalEnergies Corbion and French composite manufacturer Benvic are collaborating to expand the use of Luminy® PLA-based plastics in durable applications such as automotive, healthcare, cosmetics packaging, appliances, and electrical and electronic products.

Benvic will integrate TotalEnergies Corbion's Luminy® PLA into its Plantura biobased plastic product line and compound it with other biobased materials. For durable applications, these solutions offer a lower carbon footprint alternative compared to fossil-based ABS, PS, and PP.

Eric Grange, Marketing Director of Benvic, stated: "Benvic has always focused on the design and production capabilities of Plantura because we believe in the future of bio-based materials. With the support of TotalEnergies Corbion, we are ready to explore new opportunities, strengthen our position in the market, and provide our customers with high-performance sustainable materials."

Although Benvic has long been a leader in the building PVC composite materials industry, the company is now expanding its expertise into new materials and fields, including consumer goods, electrical and electronic products, and automotive.

Hao Ding, Global Marketing Director of TotalEnergies Corbion, stated: "We are excited to collaborate with Benvic to expand the use of sustainable PLA composites. With our strong network of brand owners and deep insights into PLA and the market, we believe we can jointly accelerate applications in key industries, showcasing the versatility and advantages of PLA far beyond packaging and food service items."

Through collaboration in product optimization and customer engagement, the two companies aim to position PLA composites as an innovative and scalable solution for durable goods original equipment manufacturers and brand owners, particularly in the automotive and electronics sectors.

TotalEnergies Corbion is headquartered in the Netherlands and operates a production facility in Rayong, Thailand, with an annual capacity of 75,000 tons of PLA. Its Luminy® PLA product range includes high-temperature and standard PLA grades, widely used in various markets ranging from packaging to consumer goods, fibers, and automotive applications. The biodegradable and compostable properties of PLA make it a preferred material for various markets and applications, including fresh fruit packaging, food utensils, durable consumer goods, toys, and 3D printing. The company also recycles its internal waste generated from the original Luminy® PLA production through a hydrolytic depolymerization process at its Rayong, Thailand facility.
