The statement said that the restructuring plan would merge and reduce the existing 28 bureaus to 15. The number of regional offices would be reduced from 10 to 5. The positions to be cut were mainly from the US Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health.

The Department of Health and Human Services is the latest target in the Trump administration's push to cut spending and staff across the federal government. The Trump administration's large-scale reduction of federal employees has recently sparked multiple legal lawsuits.
