IT Home Note: The Mercedes A-Class, launched in 1997, is now in its fourth generation. The latest generation was released in 2018 and updated in 2023. Mercedes Chief Technology Officer Markus Schafer stated that the brand needs models with greater global appeal. Hatchbacks are popular in Europe but perform poorly in the Chinese and US markets.
The message states that Mercedes-Benz is streamlining its global product line, reducing the number of compact models from 7 to 4, which will be the CLA sedan, CLA shooting brake, GLA and GLB SUVs. After the A-Class is discontinued, the CLA will become the most affordable entry-level model for Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz plans to launch the next generation CLA model in 2026, based on the all-new electric platform MMA, offering hybrid and all-electric versions. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has canceled the originally planned MB.EA platform for the follow-up models of the EQE and EQS, opting instead to use existing platforms.
