Suitable for Artificial Casings! BASF Launches World's First High Water Permeability Thermoplastic Polyamide (PA)

hzeyun 2025-09-12 10:00:16

Huizheng Information: BASF has introduced Ultramid® H33 L, the world’s first thermoplastic polyamide with high water permeability, to the market. The unique combination of strength and water permeability makes Ultramid® H an innovative material in the field of artificial casings, suitable for the production of smoked and subsequently dried sausages.

To date, such casings are typically made from materials like collagen or cellulose. This new type of polyamide, with its strength advantages, can produce artificial casings with significantly reduced wall thickness, making it an attractive alternative. The hydrophilicity of Ultramid® H allows the smoky aroma required during the smoking process to penetrate the artificial casings made of pure polyamide, seeping into the sausage product. The high water permeability allows for subsequent drying processes to be carried out directly within the casing.

Dr. Rolf Minkwitz, Head of Polyamide Product Development at BASF, explained: "Ultramid® H opens up new application areas for thermoplastic polyamides that were previously unattainable with existing technologies, standing out uniquely among thermoplastic plastics. Its processing method is the same as any other polyamide, allowing customers to incorporate Ultramid® H into their production systems without needing to adjust their existing manufacturing processes."

With the development of this innovative material, BASF is setting new standards for the research and application of polyamides and will showcase Ultramid® H for the first time at the world's largest plastics trade fair, "K Fair," held from October 8 to 15 in Düsseldorf, Germany. The BASF booth is located in Hall 5, C21/D21, where experts will be available to answer questions regarding product performance.
