SABIC’s New Process Implemented: Cascade Flow Technology Reduces Clamping Force by 50%, Solving the Challenge of Manufacturing Large Thermoplastic Parts

Plastmatch Global Digest 2025-08-28 14:21:33

Saudi petrochemical giant Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has officially launched its "Megamolding" process. The company claims that this process will significantly reduce the manufacturing difficulty of large thermoplastic parts.

The company stated that the "Super Molding" platform integrates advanced materials, processing technologies, predictive engineering, and mold technologies, enabling the industrial-scale production of large thermoplastic components. It also addresses typical challenges in the molding process, such as excessive clamping tonnage requirements, part warpage, uneven cooling, and long production cycles.

According to the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, the core technological highlight of this process lies inCascade molding flow method(cascade mould flow method) — This method allows control over the sequence in which the material fills the mold cavity. This technology can reduce the clamping tonnage requirements of the equipment by up to 50%, enabling standard medium-tonnage machines to produce larger parts without the need for bulky and costly heavy-duty presses.

A spokesperson for the company stated that the "Super Molding" process can also integrate secondary processing steps such as foaming and in-mold coating. The spokesperson added that processing companies and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can gain access to this process platform by collaborating with SABIC.

Application Fields

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation has indicated that the technology has already been tested in applications such as electric vehicle battery casings. Its potential application areas can also extend to the energy and infrastructure industries, specifically including the production of large energy storage device casings, wind turbine components, and grid-related structural parts.

In addition, the construction industry is also one of the potential application areas for this technology, as it can be used to produce structural panels, roofing components, and reinforced plastic parts. The company also stated that the "super molding" process can be applied in the manufacturing of industrial equipment enclosures, chemical storage tanks, and pipeline systems, and is also suitable for producing appliance housings, furniture components, and protective casings for consumer products.
