ReVolt Brings New Clean Energy Momentum to Hollywood

Autohome 2025-09-22 09:20:28

The celebrity effect may be the driving force behind Hollywood's global impact, but the true power supporting massive box office revenues is rarely known. Currently, most production companies still rely on noisy and environmentally polluting gasoline and diesel generators to power shooting locations. However, as the scale of film sets continues to expand and professional filming equipment becomes increasingly complex, energy demands are continuously rising, and the issue of carbon dioxide emissions is becoming more severe.

ReVolt Holdings, Inc. (ReVolt) has launched a more advanced solution to power filming locations and outdoor sets, providing clean, portable, and uninterrupted electricity. The ReVolt system operates with low noise, high efficiency, and achieves zero carbon emissions, fully covering all power needs from cameras, recording equipment, lighting devices to special effects apparatus and on-site camp facilities.

ReVolt Holdings, Inc. (ReVolt) has launched a more advanced solution for providing clean, mobile, and uninterrupted power to filming locations and production studios. The ReVolt system operates quietly, is highly efficient, and achieves zero carbon emissions, fully covering all electricity needs from cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and special effects devices to on-site camp facilities. Founded in 2020, this startup has quickly gained industry recognition and has established partnerships with several production companies, including Amazon MGM Studios, Apple Studios, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, and its subsidiary HBO, to provide clean power for their filming locations.

Before founding ReVolt, J.D. Schwalm gained extensive experience in special effects technology development at his first company, Innovation Workshop. Now, as the CEO of ReVolt, he has become an industry leader advocating for replacing diesel generators with cleaner and more efficient power sources.

A 10-kilowatt diesel generator produces noise of about 75 decibels during operation, equivalent to the noise level of a leaf blower, and generates as much carbon dioxide in 12 hours as a gasoline car would by driving 225 miles. Due to issues with noise and exhaust emissions, diesel generators typically need to be installed at least 1,000 feet away from the set, which requires laying thousands of feet of expensive and cumbersome cables.

In addition, diesel generators produce "dirty electricity," requiring additional filtering equipment to support the power supply for precision digital lighting and motion control devices. In contrast, the ReVolt charging system outputs pure sine wave power, ensuring a clean and stable power supply, and operates almost silently, emitting sound similar to that of a computer fan.

ReVolt

The birth of ReVolt stems from Schwalm's insight into the industry's pain points—how to provide stable and uninterrupted power for the complex and variable electrical loads on film shooting sets with limited battery capacity.

He stated, "As long as fuel is continuously added, diesel generators can provide power for a long time, and at that time, there was no battery system in the world that could achieve this. At this point, ReVolt was born, introducing a battery generator system that can charge while running."

ReVolt applies its uninterruptible power supply technology to an expanding fleet of portable models. The smallest model, WeVolt, provides 17.5 kWh of power and 14 kW of output, equivalent to a small household generator. The Mule model, weighing 8,500 pounds, offers 210 kWh of power and 120 kW of output, supporting multiple voltage connections including 480V, 208V, 240V, and 110V. In 2024, Schwalm and his team received two patents for their continuous battery power design, with three more patents pending.

To ensure system voltage stability, ReVolt employs Vicor's BCM® bus converters, DCM™ DC-DC converters, and the newly released PRM™ regulators.

The BCM4414 can convert and isolate an 800V voltage to a 48V bus at 35A, and the DCM3414 draws power from this bus to regulate it for a 24V load. The BCM4414 can also function as a battery simulator, reducing the need for bulky 48V batteries.

The BCM4414 can convert and isolate an 800V voltage to a 48V bus at 35A, while the DCM3414 draws power from this bus and regulates it for a 24V load. The BCM4414 boasts a power density of 770W/in³ and measures only 4.35 x 1.4 x 0.37 inches. It can also function as a battery simulator, reducing the need for bulky traditional 48V batteries. The PRM is a non-isolated buck-boost DC-DC regulator capable of converting 48V to multiple output voltages, with a power density exceeding 2kW/in³ and an efficiency of up to 96%.

Schwalm pointed out: "With just one Vicor module, the effect that used to require six to eight components can be achieved."

In today's society, the demand for portable clean energy has never been more urgent. While ReVolt is gradually transforming the power supply methods in the film industry, it is also actively exploring broader new application areas, providing clean power supply from disaster-stricken areas to construction sites and large event venues.

As the trend of electric vehicle development and the demand for more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy continue to rise, ReVolt is deepening its collaboration with Vicor, a company dedicated to modular power solutions, to lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.
