LG Chem 2025-08-04 15:11:11

On August 4th, LG Chem announced that its subsidiary LG-Eni BioRefining has officially commenced construction of an HVO (Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil) plant in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. This plant is the first eco-friendly bio-oil plant in South Korea that produces oil based on plant-based materials, and it is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons by 2027.

HVO is a new generation of bio-oil made by adding hydrogen to renewable vegetable oils such as waste cooking oil. Its characteristic is that it does not freeze at low temperatures and can be used to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), biodiesel, and bio-naphtha. Among them, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is used as aircraft fuel, while bio-naphtha is used for the production of ethylene, a core raw material in petrochemicals.

LG Chem plans to expand the proportion of plant-based BCB (Bio Circular Balanced) products that obtain ISCC PLUS international environmental certification by introducing bio-naphtha. These materials, such as ABS, EVA, and SAP, are widely used in household appliances, electric vehicles, sports goods, and sanitary products.

Previously, LG Chem and the Italian energy giant EniEniIn December 2024, Enilive, a subsidiary of the group, announced the establishment of a joint venture, LG-Eni BioRefining.

Eni (EniThe group, as one of Europe's energy giants, has an HVO facility in Italy with a capacity of 2 million tons, possessing operational experience in large-scale production processes and leading environmental refining technologies. Additionally, it has established a global supply chain for eco-friendly raw materials covering regions such as Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Enilive CEO Stefano Ballista stated:

Through this commencement, we will further expand Enilive's market presence for sustainable products and consolidate its leading position in the field of environmentally friendly fuel manufacturing.
