Covestro Integrates PC Material Library into Autodesk VRED, Expanding Material Access Channels
Covestro and Autodesk VRED have announced the direct integration of Covestro's digital sample library Imagio® into Autodesk VRED 2026.1. Imagio® is a platform by Covestro that features thousands of realistic digital material twins for polycarbonate materials. It allows designers to virtually experience and utilize these materials without the need for physical prototypes or access to design centers.
Global users can instantly access photorealistic PC material property demonstrations.
Integrate the Imagio® material database into Autodesk's VRED (a design platform for automobiles and other transportation vehicles such as aircraft or rail vehicles), allowing designers around the world to instantly access realistic representations of Covestro's multifunctional polycarbonate materials in terms of color, gloss, transparency, translucency, or surface texture.
Integrating our digital sample library into Autodesk VRED is a milestone for both parties."said Dr. Tobias Rausch, Business Development Manager for Digital Sampling in the Engineering Plastics Business Entity at Covestro."We are effectively lowering the barriers for vehicle and auto parts designers to enter our world of materials. They can now easily find our polycarbonate materials and their many aspects, and even try them out with just a few clicks. This saves a series of iterations, thereby saving time, money, and emissions associated with transportation and sample production."
In industries like automotive, saving time is a crucial advantage, as development cycles are becoming shorter and the efficiency of the design process is increasingly important. The ability to easily experiment with realistic effects and surface structures through drag-and-drop applications is a significant benefit. Unlike physical samples, this method leaves less room for interpretation, thereby reducing errors that have always existed when transferring properties from samples to the final application.
"The integration of Imagio® significantly expands the potential of our design portfolio and provides tremendous assistance to our users.Marek Trawny, Director of Product Management for Automotive and Conceptual Design at Autodesk VRED, explained. In an era where speed and accuracy in the design process are crucial, realistic digital material twins provide our users with a decisive advantage. Designers can now instantly and accurately see how polycarbonate materials will appear in their designs. This aids decision-making and inspires creativity."
Next step: Mechanical performance simulation or weather resistance simulation.
Autodesk is one of the major suppliers of design software in the automotive industry and is used by leading manufacturers. Covestro appears exclusively in this digital design tool for making design and material decisions, which is a strategic milestone for both companies. Future features are planned, such as simulation tools connected to mechanical performance, rheology, or weather resistance simulations. This will enable designers to simulate the behavior of materials after being exposed to the elements for years and visualize the resulting changes in appearance.
Imagio® integration is available for Autodesk VRED Professional 2026.1. Users need an Imagio® account, which is available for enterprise clients and public organizations. For users of other visualization platforms, Imagio® can still be accessed through its web interface, providing the same comprehensive material library and downloadable AxF files compatible with most leading rendering software programs.
The project also emphasizes the "material effects" — the guiding philosophy of Covestro's participation in this year's K Fair in Düsseldorf. At booth A75 in Hall 6, Covestro will particularly highlight advancements and innovations in the areas of a sustainable future, automotive, electronics, healthcare, sports, and leisure.
