On March 7, the Xianghu Laboratory held the Education-Science-Talent Integration and the Second Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Conference. At the meeting, both parties announced their collaboration to jointly establish the Synthetic Biology Joint Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Innovation Center).
Member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Hangzhou Science and Technology Bureau Hu Biao, and renowned international expert in synthetic biology and Innovation Center Director Ramon Gonzalez unveiled the plaque for the Innovation Center. Executive Deputy Director of Xianghu Laboratory and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences Yang Hua, and Chairman of Moga Biotechnology Li Kaijun were present to witness the event.
Xianghu Laboratory is one of the ten key provincial laboratories prioritized by the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government, focusing on two major research clusters: biobreeding and ecologically efficient agriculture. It has established four research institutes in biotechnology, bioseeds, bio-interactions, and biomanufacturing, dedicated to tackling core agricultural technologies and building a strategic scientific and technological force for agriculture. Synthetic biology is one of the main directions focused on in the laboratory's biomanufacturing field. The laboratory looks forward to deeply integrating industry, academia, and research, accelerating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and promoting the development of new productivity in agriculture.
Mojia Biotech, as a rapidly growing international biomanufacturing company, has been dedicated to developing environmentally friendly biomanufacturing methods using synthetic biology technology for many years, aiming to replace high-pollution and high-energy-consuming traditional chemical production technologies. Its research and development are demand-oriented, leveraging its innovative OrthBio® platform technology and C1+BioTM and other innovative biosynthetic pathways, combined with the interdisciplinary integration advantages of biology and chemistry, overcoming the bottlenecks of traditional biomanufacturing. Mojia Biotech is also committed to developing innovative approaches for biomanufacturing using non-grain-based raw materials, with products covering various fields such as bio-based new materials, agrochemicals, and food. It has completed process developments for multiple fine chemicals and agrochemicals, with some products achieving industrialization.
The next step is for both parties to jointly establish an innovation center, which will rely on the scientific research space of the new headquarters of Xianghu Laboratory. A high-level scientific research team will be jointly formed. The innovation center will focus on three core areas: animal feed additives such as amino acids, biopesticides, and agricultural biomaterials. It will conduct basic research and process development, with a focus on breaking through the design of biosynthetic pathways for products like amino acids and plant functional components, as well as addressing the challenges of industrial application. The innovation center will integrate the two major technology platforms, OrthBio® and C1+BioTM, combining metabolic engineering, enzyme engineering, and AI-driven protein computational design technology to overcome the bottlenecks of traditional biomanufacturing. The research and development results from the innovation center will be rapidly commercialized through Moga Biotech and related cooperative enterprises.
Moga Biotech is a fast-growing, product-oriented biomanufacturing company dedicated to sustainable development and the circular bioeconomy. Moga Biotech utilizes renewable carbon sources and green processes to produce innovative materials and agricultural chemicals. The company's R&D headquarters is located in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, with research institutions in Singapore and the United States, and it has its own production base domestically.
