Braskem Launches Bio-Based PE for Healthcare at K 2025

Plastmatch Global Digest 2025-10-14 14:02:18

Braskem is currently participating in K 2025, the world's leading trade fair for plastics and rubber in Düsseldorf, Germany. On the opening day, Braskem showcased a new generation of bio-based and circular product solutions aimed at accelerating the transformation of the plastics industry. Under its sustainable product portfolio, Braskem is presenting product launches and partnerships that bring sustainability and innovation to the packaging, healthcare, hygiene, and consumer goods sectors.

New Product Launch

MDO film containing I'm Green™ bio-based PE

Braskem has launched a new application of Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) technology, which utilizes bio-based polyethylene extracted from ethanol made from sugarcane. These films feature enhanced stiffness, optical performance, and recyclability, enabling single-material packaging such as flow wraps, MDO labels, and stand-up pouches. The use of MDO films can lead to the development of structures that are more aligned with a circular economy while still meeting performance requirements. The MDO films were developed in collaboration with Braskem's circular packaging design laboratory Cazoolo and processor FCO Group.

Medcol: I am Green™ bio-based low-density polyethylene for healthcare.

Under the Medcol brand, Braskem has launched a low-density polyethylene specifically designed for pharmaceutical applications, such as blow-fill-seal processes for plastic ampoules with screw caps. The material complies with regulatory requirements, contains no additives, and offers higher temperature resistance and fluidity. Its updated life cycle assessment study (2023) shows a carbon footprint of -2.27 kgCO.2Per kilogram E value has been enhanced, strengthening its sustainability in healthcare packaging.

I am Green™ bio-based HDPE for non-woven fabric.

Braskem has launched the I'm green™ bio-based high-density polyethylene specifically developed for the non-woven fabric market. This HDPE is designed for bi-component fiber applications such as hygiene products and diapers, featuring low gel levels, excellent processing stability, higher heat resistance, and outstanding color stability. It performs well in both bi-component spunbond and monocomponent spunbond processes, ensuring the reliability of high-performance hygiene applications. According to the updated life cycle assessment study in 2023, the carbon footprint of this material is -2.01 kgCO.2Each kilogram of E value emphasizes its contribution to more sustainable sanitary product solutions.

EVA 21%: Ultra-soft I'm Green™ bio-based foam

Braskem has launched a new I'm green™ bio-based ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) with 21% vinyl acetate, offering significantly improved softness and flexibility compared to lower VA grades. This material is particularly suited for footwear applications, especially for soles and insoles that require enhanced comfort and performance. As part of Braskem's I'm green™ bio-based product portfolio, this EVA combines functional advantages with renewable sources, making it a sustainable alternative for high-quality consumer goods.

Featured Applications on the Booth

Polytan, a German manufacturer of high-performance sports surfaces, is using Braskem's I'm green™ bio-based polyethylene to bring sustainability to its advanced turf technology. Poligras Paris GT zero is the world's first zero-carbon synthetic hockey turf, which will feature prominently during the 2024 Paris Olympics, setting a new benchmark for sustainable sports infrastructure. In the football sector, the LigaTurf Cross GT zero system offers a fully recyclable multifunctional turf solution that supports eco-friendly organic infills while meeting elite performance standards and helping to reduce carbon emissions.

Bottle up and Eurobottle: reusable bottles made from I'm Green™ bio-based PE.

Bottle Up is headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, offering stylish, refillable bottles designed to reduce plastic waste and lower carbon emissions using renewable materials. Eurobottle, based in Dronten, Netherlands, has over 30 years of experience in producing durable, reusable sports water bottles, and is now fully biobased to support a circular future.

These partners collectively demonstrate how everyday products can combine design, durability, and climate-friendly materials.

Veja: The French footwear and accessories brand Veja has created a sneaker with an inner layer made from I'm Green™ bio-based material. This product highlights how bio-based plastics can be seamlessly integrated into premium consumer goods without compromising design or performance.

Exhibit the performance of polymers in various processes.

Braskem is collaborating with leading machine manufacturers to showcase the performance of its polymer technology in various conversion processes through strategic partnerships. On-site demonstrations at the partner booths will showcase the practical applications of these materials, highlighting their role in driving industry innovation and sustainability.

These partnerships emphasize the importance of seamless integration between equipment, processing methods, and polymer product portfolios. By adjusting technological capabilities, Braskem and its partners are providing more efficient and forward-looking solutions in response to changing market demands. Braskem's polymers can be found at Euro Machinery (Hall 11, I46), Dr. Boy (Hall 13, A43), and Carnevalli (Hall 16, C170).

"K 2025 is an ideal platform to showcase how our innovations are ready for practical application.Walmir Soller, Vice President of Olefins/Polyolefins in North America, Europe, and Asia, said.We are not just testing the market; we are expanding solutions that combine technological performance with environmental benefits."
