Bolu Will Expand Polypropylene (PP) Composite Materials Production Capacity

On September 4th, Borealis announced an investment of over 100 million euros to establish a new polypropylene (PP) compounding production line at its Schwechat production site in Austria. The new production line is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026 and will specialize in producing high-end compounds for applications requiring durability, high-temperature resistance, or lightweight properties. This investment also includes upgrades to existing compounding facilities, although the specific increase in capacity has not been disclosed.

Virginia Wieser, spokesperson for Borouge Group, stated, "This capacity expansion involves a scale of tens of thousands of tons." In August, Borouge confirmed the suspension of its plan to build a 60,000-ton-per-year mechanical recycling plant for waste plastics in Schwechat.

Previously, Borouge announced an investment in a new high melt strength (HMS) polypropylene production line in Burghausen, Germany, which is also planned to start operations in the second half of 2026. This HMS polypropylene production line is mainly intended for the production of polymer foams, with a focus on meeting the demand for lightweight products in the consumer goods, automotive, and construction industries. Currently, the total polypropylene production capacity at the Burghausen site is 330,000 tons per year.
