Annual Output of 5,000 Tons! Industrialization Project of Anhui Tianchen Chemical's Intrinsic Fire-Resistant Waterborne Coating Passes Acceptance

On September 5, 2025, the Anhui Provincial Major Science and Technology Project "Industrialization Project of Producing 5,000 Tons of Intrinsic Fire-Resistant Waterborne Coatings Annually" successfully passed acceptance at the undertaking unit, Zhongyan Anhui Tianchen Chemical Co., Ltd. This achievement marks an important breakthrough in the research, development, and industrialization of high-end fire-resistant materials.

This project is led by China Salt Anhui Tianchen Chemical Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Hefei University of Technology and Hefei University, and was approved and supported by the Anhui Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2022. As the project undertaking entity, China Salt Anhui Tianchen Chemical Co., Ltd. is a high-tech enterprise under China Salt Group. Since its establishment in 1999, it has been focusing on the research, development, and production of polymer materials such as polyvinyl chloride paste resin. As a key enterprise in the domestic polyvinyl chloride industry and one of the six major paste resin manufacturers in China, the company’s paste resin production capacity has reached 130,000 tons per year. Its core products have obvious advantages, providing a solid industrial foundation for the advancement of the project.

At the technical level, this project focuses on fundamental innovation in fireproof materials. Unlike traditional methods that rely on physically adding flame retardants, the fire resistance of the coating developed here originates from molecular structure design. The project team used PVC granules as the core and selected acrylates, styrene, and urethane as composite monomers. By employing a pre-emulsified semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization technique, they successfully prepared a series of core–shell structured PVC-based aqueous latexes, ultimately developing a water-based fireproof coating with intrinsic flame-retardant properties.

Based on this technological breakthrough, the new product has a very broad application prospect. The coating can be widely used in the new energy industry, providing efficient fire protection for energy storage station containers, battery racks, and new energy vehicle battery enclosures. It can also be applied in public safety fields with high population density such as subway tunnels, hospitals, schools, and airports, as well as high-security demand scenarios like data centers and precision instrument workshops. Additionally, it will promote the environmental upgrade of traditional steel structures and wood fireproof coatings, helping enterprises seize the green policy market. The industrial scale of producing 5000 tons per year signifies that the product has a certain scale of market supply capability, offering new fire protection solutions for multiple high-end fields.

The project has achieved substantial innovative results during its implementation. Four national invention patent applications and two utility model patent applications have been submitted, with two invention patents and two utility model patents already granted, providing comprehensive legal protection for core technologies. Additionally, the project has been approved for one new product and one new process in Anhui Province. In conjunction with production practice, two enterprise standards have been established to support standardized large-scale production, quality control, and market promotion. This fully demonstrates the project’s end-to-end innovation capability, from "technology research and development" to "product implementation" and finally to "standard establishment."

As a benchmark enterprise in China's polyvinyl chloride industry, China Salt Anhui Tianchen Chemical has not only consolidated its leading position in the industry through this project but also provided an important demonstration for the transformation and upgrading of traditional chemical enterprises through the collaborative innovation model of "government-industry-academia-research-application." With the large-scale application of intrinsic fire-retardant water-based coatings, China's independent and controllable capabilities in the high-end fireproof materials sector will be significantly enhanced, injecting new momentum into the safe development of strategic emerging industries.
