All-New MG4 Semi-Solid-State Battery Version Listed in MIIT Announcement, Mass Delivery Within This Year
Recently, the all-new MG4 was officially listed in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's new vehicle announcement, including the all-new MG4 semi-solid-state battery version. This version solves the technical bottleneck of battery performance and safety at low temperatures, bringing a new technological breakthrough to the industry. The semi-solid-state battery it is equipped with has achieved innovation in underlying material technology, reducing the liquid electrolyte content to 5%, which is close to the level of quasi-solid-state batteries, fundamentally eliminating the risk of battery spontaneous combustion. This announcement marks the official entry of semi-solid-state battery technology into a new stage of commercial application.
On August 29, the all-new MG4 will be officially launched, and the price of its semi-solid-state battery version will be announced simultaneously, with mass delivery expected within the year. Semi-solid-state battery technology is considered the optimal solution for transitioning from traditional liquid batteries to all-solid-state batteries. Through the MG4 model, SAIC's MG is bringing this technology to the 100,000-level electric vehicle market, ushering in an era of "universal access" to semi-solid-state battery technology, which could potentially change the rules of the game in the new energy vehicle industry.
The brand new MG4 is equipped with a semi-solid state battery, a result of the collaboration between SAIC and Qingtao. It utilizes manganese-based lithium-ion battery technology. The electrolyte content of this battery is only 5%, the lowest in the industry, yet it boasts an energy density of up to 300Wh/kg, far exceeding the 160-200Wh/kg of mainstream lithium iron phosphate batteries.
In the mass production process of semi-solid-state batteries, the industry has long faced "hell-level" challenges. The high-viscosity coating process speed has dropped to one-tenth of the traditional rate, and the packaging yield is low; previously, it was only used in high-end vehicles priced above 400,000 yuan. SAIC Motor has successfully overcome these technical bottlenecks and unveiled the world's first production line with a million-unit capacity, marking a substantial breakthrough in the mass production technology of semi-solid-state batteries.
In terms of safety performance, the all-new MG4's semi-solid-state battery has passed the industry's most rigorous "360° acupuncture test," achieving zero smoke and zero fire, significantly reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion. The capacity retention rate is 90% in a -20℃ environment, with a 13.8% increase in low-temperature range. Even under extreme low temperatures of -25℃, it can still maintain 72% of its range capability.
The all-new MG4 is a key model in SAIC MG’s new energy vehicle strategy, positioned as a “pure electric, intelligent, and fun large hatchback.” In addition to its core semi-solid-state battery technology, the MG4 also boasts strong product competitiveness in other aspects, including class-leading space, a driving range of 437-530 kilometers, an integrated thermal management system, CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery-body integration technology, and more.
In terms of intelligent configuration, the all-new MG4 is the first to feature MG × OPPO Smart Mobility interconnection, equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and a 15.6-inch 2.5K resolution large screen. The vehicle also integrates 14 active safety features, including rear automatic emergency braking, door opening collision warning, and is equipped with an AI rearview mirror blind spot compensation system to address visibility issues during rainy or nighttime conditions.
The launch of the MG4 semi-solid-state battery version will have a profound impact on the new energy vehicle industry. It promotes the advancement of power battery technology into the "post-liquid era," signifying a significant step forward for the new energy vehicle industry towards greater safety and higher efficiency. As more manufacturers join this track, consumers will benefit from more advanced battery technology at lower prices, ultimately driving the entire industry towards safer and more efficient development. Chinese automobile brands will also gain more advantages and influence in the global new energy vehicle competition.
