SK Hynix CEO: Memory Chip Shortage Expected to Persist Into the Next Decade
SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung recently said that the current shortage of memory chips affecting the PC, automotive, and consumer electronics markets is highly likely to continue beyond 2030. In his first interview since the South Korean company completed a record-setting U.S. listing on Friday, Kwak said customers have been signing long-term contracts because they believe the shortage will last longer. SK Hynix, along with Samsung and Micron, has become one of the main beneficiaries of the AI boom. Massive purchases by data center operators have boosted demand for conventional memory chips while also significantly increasing the popularity of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) designed for AI systems. This buying frenzy has further squeezed the supply of general-purpose memory chips, leading to shortages in sectors such as PCs, smartphones, and automobiles. Kwak noted in the interview that SK Hynix’s analysis shows the shortage may continue into the next decade, and feedback from customers confirms the industry’s widespread expectation of a long-term undersupply of memory chips. -
