The world's first! Ideal Auto open-sources its self-developed operating system "Ideal Star Ring OS": The Android of cars has arrived.
Fast Technology March 27 News, at the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Meeting,Li Xiang, founder, chairman, and CEO of Li Auto, announced that the self-developed in-car operating system "Li Auto Star OS" will be open-sourced.
It is reported that this system, as a complete vehicle-level operating system, is fully open source. Li Auto has thus become the world's first automobile company to open source its onboard operating system.
Li Auto's self-developed operating system began in 2021, when the global pandemic impacted the chip supply chain, making it time-consuming and costly in terms of labor to adapt closed-source systems to new chips.
According to Huang Zhen, the head of the vehicle operating system architecture at Ideal Auto, adapting a closed-source system to a new chip takes six months and requires a significant amount of manpower.
Ideal Automotive addresses issues by developing its own operating system, reducing the adaptation time for new model chips from 6 months to 4 weeks, and supporting various architectures of automotive chips, achieving freedom of chip selection and significantly alleviating the impact of the chip shortage on the supply chain.
Smart cars require specialized operating systems, just like smartphones gave birth to Android and iOS in the past.
Due to the high technical barriers in this field, it requires horizontal and vertical joint innovation in areas such as cockpit, intelligent driving, chassis, applications, systems, and hardware.Currently, there is no open-source operating system aimed at complete vehicles in the ecosystem.
In the past three years, Li Auto has invested over 1 billion yuan, with a research and development team of nearly 200 people. In 2024, the self-developed operating system by Li Auto will be commercially deployed in vehicles.
Li Xiang revealed that. The Ideal Star Ring OS will launch in the open-source community this April,预计每年可为汽车厂商和供应商节省数千万甚至上亿元的操作系统授权费用.
