Mercedes Builds Mobile Experimental Charging Vehicle, Charges 100kWh in 10 Minutes

IT Home 2025-10-09 09:46:55

ITHomeOn October 9, news from foreign media Autocar reported that Mercedes-Benz is working to solve the last major challenge of electric vehicle adoption—charging time, hoping to make charging as quick and convenient as refueling.

For this purpose, Mercedes-Benz has created an advanced mobile laboratory - the Experimental Charging Vehicle. Based on the V-Class, the vehicle is equipped with five types of charging interfaces, becoming a mobile research and development platform for exploring the limits of charging technology, includingHigh-power energy transmission, battery cooling, bidirectional charging, automatic sensing, and conductive charging....as well as solar charging, etc.

Malte Sievers, the charging development director of Mercedes-Benz, said: "The next competition is convenience. Customers want..."Charging is as quick, smooth, and easy as refueling."This is precisely the focus of research on experimental charging vehicles."

It is understood that the experimental charging vehicle is equipped with a dual-port combined charging system (CCS) and a heavy-duty megawatt charging system (MCS). The CCS system of the experimental charging vehicle can achieve a maximum power of 900 kW — under a maximum current of 1000 A.It only takes about 10 minutes to charge 100 kWh of energy. Equivalent to three times the new GLC EQ.

The MCS system derived from electric trucks has higher power, capable of applying a load of over 1000 kW to the battery to test thermal tolerance under high-power charging.

Bidirectional charging is also a key area, allowing electric vehicles to power homes, feed back into the grid, or drive tools and outdoor equipment. Experimental charging vehicles support both AC and DC bidirectional charging, and the mass production process is already underway.

Starting in 2026, Mercedes-Benz will launch MB Charge Home in the UK, bundling wall-mounted charging boxes with energy management services, allowing owners to use their electric vehicle batteries as home energy storage. Mercedes estimates that a typical electric vehicle can power a home for several days, saving homeowners a significant amount over the course of a year.Approximately 435 pounds (IT Home Note: Equivalent to about 4169 RMB at the current exchange rate) for electricity bills.

In the long term, Mercedes plans to launch a "virtual energy account" where customers can earn points by feeding energy back to the grid through their electric vehicles, enhancing grid stability during peak periods. Through self-developed software, thousands of vehicles can be coordinated into a "virtual power plant." Points can be used to reduce future charging costs, transforming cars into flexible and mobile energy storage units.

The experimental charging vehicle is also used forDeveloping future charging methodsThrough the electromagnetic field between the ground and the vehicle-mounted coil.Wireless transmission of 11kW inductive chargingSuitable for what Sievers calls short-term "fast charging."

An automatic conductive charging and high-power charging cable connection robot system is also being tested. The experimental charging vehicle equipped with a photovoltaic roof can, under ideal sunlight conditions...Approximately 30km range can be added each day.The standby power consumption can be offset or slowly charged while parked. All technological developments are integrated into the Mercedes global charging network, with the goal of making DC fast charging as convenient as refueling.
