Disruption! Trinseo Launches Food-Contact Approved Recycled Polystyrene Using Dissolution Technology

Trinseo has launched a transparent recycled polystyrene resin that uses dissolution technology, suitable for dairy containers, food trays, hot and cold drink cups, and other food contact applications.

These resins are produced at Trinseo's facility in Schkopau. They use pre-consumer and post-consumer polystyrene feedstock from Heathland, which reportedly contains 30% recycled polystyrene. Trinseo claims that these resins have about an 18% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin polystyrene.

To validate the food safety performance of the resin and test the purification efficiency of its dissolution unit, Trinseo collaborated with the Fraunhofer Institute to prepare a new technical dossier for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and conducted a challenge test. They added contaminants to the feedstock and then analyzed the final product.

The results clearly showed that these resins comply with European food contact regulations. Trinseo stated that the company is committed to monitoring the resins to ensure they meet the requirements of EU Regulation 2022/1616.
