Covestro Increases Specialty Polycarbonate Film Capacity in Thailand

Specialized Plastics Compilation Mar 05 07:03

With the mechanical completion of a new production line at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Thailand, Covestro has further increased its global capacity for specialty films made from polycarbonate (PC). The investment, which is in the higher single-digit million euro range, has been completed as planned. A total of around 40 new jobs will be created.

Latest technology to reduce CO2 emissions

Covestro has been operating specialty film production facilities in Thailand since 2007. The portfolio includes polycarbonate films from the Makrofol® series and Bayfol® products made from polycarbonate blends. These high-performance specialty films are used in many applications across multiple industries, such as healthcare, mobility, and identification documents.

“The new production facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for efficient production, thereby reducing our CO2 emissions,” said Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer at Covestro. With the expansion of capacity, we can meet the growing demand from customers in the Asia-Pacific region for innovative specialty films, particularly in the medical technology sector, and strengthen our Solutions & Specialties segment.

“The new production facility is important to us because it accelerates time-to-market while expanding our market access in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Aukje Doornbos, Global Head of the Specialty Films business entity. “We aim to drive Covestro's growth through market-focused innovation and a stronger customer orientation.”

ISCC PLUS certified site

Since 2022, the Map Ta Phut site has been ISCC PLUS certified, enabling it to manufacture and supply mass-balanced products. Through the mass balance approach, bio-based or recycled raw materials are fed into the production process at an early stage and mathematically allocated to the final products. This saves fossil resources and reduces CO2 emissions, while the quality of mass-balanced products is the same as that of pure fossil-based products. With this ready-to-use solution, manufacturers can continue to use their proven formulations, equipment, and processes.

ISCC is an internationally recognized sustainability certification for biomass and bioenergy. The standard covers all stages of the value chain and is used globally. Customers can use these products in their established processes and apply them to achieve their sustainability goals. Additionally, Covestro already offers a range of films that are partially made from plant-based raw materials or partially from recycled plastics.
