Canada's Agricultural Plastic Recycling Surpasses 100,000 Tons in 2024, Significant Growth in Alberta Province
Cleanfarms, Canada’s agricultural plastics recycling organization, recently released data showing that in 2024, it assisted in the collection of over 10,000 tonnes of agricultural plastic waste, representing an increase of nearly 10% compared to 2023. In Alberta, the amount of small containers (with a capacity of less than 23 liters) recycled reached 456 tonnes, up 9.6% from 416 tonnes in 2023.
According to Cleanfarms statistics, the national three-year average recycling rate for small containers increased from 78% in 2023 to 81%, while the recycling rate for large agricultural containers rose from 59% to 62%. The grain bag recycling rate in Saskatchewan has increased for three consecutive years, reaching 69% in 2024.
Barry Friesen, the Executive Director of the organization, stated that the recycling achievements are the result of multi-party collaboration: "Farmers properly sort waste and deliver it to recycling points, site staff provide receiving services, and recycling companies facilitate the integration of materials into the industrial chain. The daily efforts of all parties have collectively contributed to this progress."
Looking ahead to 2025, Cleanfarms plans to further expand its recycling coverage by optimizing programs and enhancing outreach to improve the recycling efficiency of more recyclable materials.
