Amcor, Metsä Unite for Sustainable Packaging

In a move toward sustainable packaging solutions, global packaging leader Amcor has formed a strategic partnership with Metsä Group to develop innovative fiber-based food packaging that combines environmental responsibility with advanced food preservation technology.
The collaboration merges Amcor's expertise in high-barrier film liners and lidding with Metsä Group's Muoto, a wood-based molded fiber product. This integration aims to create 3D packaging solutions suitable for various food applications, offering both functionality and sustainability, according to the companies.
The new packaging system features advanced barrier protection for extended shelf life, recyclability within European paper streams, and a more than 80% recyclability score from the Confederation of European Paper Industries. Built with biodegradable base materials, the system offers versatility for applications from takeaway to industrial use, the companies said.
The partnership's initial products are scheduled to hit European markets later this year, with plans to develop compostable options in the future, the companies noted. This initiative expands Amcor's AmFiber portfolio, which already serves global markets in snacks, dairy, and personal care segments.
The development comes on the heels of Amcor's recent European launch of Liquiflex AmPrima flexible pouches for bulk foodservice applications, demonstrating the company's continued commitment to sustainable packaging innovation.
