Watford Control Instruments Ltd.

Watford Control was first incorporated on 5th May 1947 by the company founder Stephen Brod. Although originally named “S Brod & Company Limited”, the company originated in Kilburn North London. In 1961 the company moved north to Watford and was renamed Watford Control and then in 1988 the company moved again to Corby where it has been for the last 34 years.
Stefan Brod was born in 1923 and was a Czech Jew who escaped the Nazis in Europe. He fought for the allies as a signals officer in the RAF depot during WW2 in the Free Czech airforce in England. By all accounts he was a brilliant scientist and he presided over Watford Control for 67 years spanning a period of 8 decades. He took semi-retirement in 2011 and passed away on 7th January 2014.
During his time at the helm of Watford Control he was revered and highly respected by his staff. He designed and invented all of the products, was intensely private and fiercely protective of his intellectual property filing worldwide patents on his technology and registering Watford Control and other IP in countries as diverse as Thailand, Burma and Singapore.
He started off manufacturing power supplies and precision timers for X-Ray and photographic equipment and launched his first electromechanical voltage stabiliser in 1952.
Over the next 60 years Watford Control became the world leader in the design and manufacture of what we manufacture today. Stephen had an excellent scientific understanding of electromagnetism and he used this knowledge to design groundbreaking technology that was unique in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s much of which is still in use today.
Amazingly one of Watford Control’s specialist voltage stabilisers that Stephen invented in the 1960’s is still performing well today and although it has its limitations there is nothing on the market to match its accuracy or reliability - it was originally called the BE unit, but we have renamed it Infinity because it is so reliable.
One of our longest standing customers (Buhler Sortex - a Swiss company) have been buying the Infinity for over 50 years, they have bought thousands and thousands of them - it is simply a product without equal.
Similarly many of our customers have been working with us today for 10/20/30/40 even 50 years and over 80% of our products are exported all over the world - we work with both wind farms and the oil and gas industry.
