The expanded polystyrene, more commonly known as polystyrene (or erroneously polisterol), is a polymer of styrene. It was discovered in 1839 by a Berlin chemist, Edward Simon, by distilling an oily substance from storax (the resin of the Sweetgum tree, Liquidambar orientalis), a plant with large green leaves. In 1845, two chemists named Blyth and Von Hoffman demonstrated that the same transformation of styrene could occur in the absence of oxygen; the substance was called metastirene, and it was identical to Styroloxyd. It was not until 1866 that Marcellin Berthelot, a French chemist, correctly identified the process as a polymerization reaction. Expanded polystyrene is an economical, extremely versatile, and lightweight material; it is waterproof and easy to apply, perfect for thermal insulation.
