Paul Marie Joseph Vidal de La Blache, born on January 22, 1845 in Pézenas (Hérault) and died on April 5, 1918 in Tamaris-sur-Mer (Var), is a renowned French geographer. He, along with his disciple Lucien Gallois, initiated the Annales de géographie, the foundation for the renewal of French geography at the end of the 19th century. Vidal-Lablache remains very present in the French collective imagination through the collection of school wall maps he directed at the publishing house Armand Colin. The publisher retained the name Vidal-Lablache on all maps published until the 1960s. These maps, present in practically all schools in France, contributed to solidifying Vidal-Lablache's posthumous reputation in the general public and constitute a "place of memory".
