Cryogenics is a technology that makes use of cold temperature treatment. The technology has been used for decades to improve material properties. It may well be that its advantages have been underestimated or neglected and only since the last 50 years researchers have spent more and more time to understand this technology. Research has shown that cryogenics can be applied to metals and non-metals whereas still more exploration has to be carried out. The current state shows that for carbon steel materials austenite can be converted to almost 100% martensite. In combination with cobalt, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, as for machining tools, the carbide building can be influenced and as an example tool life drastically be improved. Non-carbon metals such as copper and aluminium experience improvement of atom structure. Metals are stress relieved trough cryogenics. Even plastic material can be improved. As an example Nylon (PA) can be strengthened and Teflon (PTFE) shows enhanced tribology behaviour. Cserv has the experience and the facility to treat various parts through state of the art process equipment. The company has a plant that has a unique design and which enables controlled cooling to minus 196 degrees Celsius. Cserv is the only company that offers such low temperature treatment on a commercial basis here in Switzerland. The plant can hold either larger components or series of parts and it can be utilized to run custom tailored R & D projects.
