A Brief History of Edwardian Bedding In 1978, Percy Edwards founded The Edwardian Bedding Company, which quickly gained a reputation for excellence throughout the 80s and 90s. Under Percy’s leadership, the company flourished until his retirement in 2002, when it was purchased by his Manager, George Crofts, and George’s friend, David Taylor. Harnessing the expertise of Edwardian’s skilled craftsmen, George and David decided to focus on boat and specialist mattresses, establishing themselves as market leaders in this sector. In 2014, Vicki Shaw acquired the company with the support of Adrian Swingler and Robert Kilner. Adrian brought extensive experience from his successful tenure with the Bedtime group, which operated numerous stores including those in Parkgate and York Road, Doncaster, before being sold to an online retailer in 2006. At this time, the pair retired to focus on horse racing. In 2010, Bedtime began opening shops again. Although the business grew rapidly, Adrian observed a decline in mattress quality due to the internet. Online retailers had driven down prices, leading to a significant drop in quality as shops tried to compete. Our only option was to manufacture our own mattresses, so we started searching for a company that could meet our quality standards. In 2014, Edwardian Bedding was purchased, and Robert joined the team. Having previously owned Bumbles Pine, a manufacturer of top-quality pine furniture, Robert was the ideal choice to manage the factory and showroom, while Adrian focused on expanding our retail presence. We now have stores in Mexborough, Malton, Hornsea, Shrewsbury, and more recently, Leyburn in North Yorkshire. Since 2014, we have updated our range while maintaining our commitment to quality. Investments in new machinery and improved purchasing power have allowed us to reduce prices on many models. We continue to offer the Edwardian Bedding 5-Year Guarantee, which remains free of charge after 12 months, unlike many of our competitors.
