The Squires Family It has not been a traditional path for the Squires family towards ownership of their own vineyard and cellar door. Paul has a long history in Senior Local Government management in Australia and after being dragged to London by Bern in the early 2000’s. He found himself working for the Mayor of London on the redevelopment of Trafalgar Square. His passion for wine has been fuelled in the past 10 years resulting in a 5-year stint as Deputy Chair and Treasurer of Winemakers of Rutherglen, whilst becoming a Director and Partner at Buller Wines in Rutherglen. Bern is a qualified nurse and has worked around the world in orthopaedics and is currently working in infection control. She is passionate about sustainability and drives the business focus on sustainable practices, waste management and developing products from her ever-growing garden. Together with their sons Connor and Ryan, they are building a lifestyle by the river with estate grown wines and a focus on local food. They have sought to create a winery that people feel comfortable dropping into, while enjoying life on the river. Moving their winery and olive grove towards a sustainable model from vineyard to consumer is key, and of course creating great affordable wines is all part of the overall experience of Squires Winery. Our sustainability starts in the vineyard and olive grove, with minimal interference in the vines and the olive trees. Sprays are used only when necessary and over the next 5 years we are progressing towards a totally organic site. One of our first investments has been to power the whole property including all of our irrigation pumps, the cellar door and the house by the power of the sun. In collaboration with Glen Melton and the team at Xirasol in Albury, we have installed a full sun tracking solar station that is state of the art. Our Australian owned and made solar array allow for grazing underneath the panels, and the bi-facial panel design, which is combined with a tracking mechanism, means energy is generated for more hours each day than a conventional fixed, single-sided panel.
