Our comprehensive capabilities ensure that we can handle every aspect of your project, from design to completion, all under one roof. Based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, Soo Foundry and Machine takes pride in delivering projects on time and within budget. We are fully equipped and ready to tackle any challenge, providing effective solutions that meet your needs. Whether you’re dealing with tight deadlines or specific requirements, we ensure that every project is completed to your satisfaction. When disaster strikes, heavy repairs are often essential. In this case, the frames had suffered severe cracks and required repair within a tight 2-week lead time. We not only repaired the cracks but also addressed other worn and damaged components. Afterward, the frames were stress relieved and machined to meet OEM specifications, ensuring durability and reliability. Soo Foundry and Machine successfully restored a 60″ diameter gate valve, originally manufactured in the late 1800s, for the Sault Ste. Marie Canal system. This historic valve was part of a water turbine system that once powered the Soo Locks. The restoration presented challenges due to the valve’s age, size, and weight—nearly 16,000 lbs when fully assembled—as well as being covered in lead paint. Despite these obstacles, the restoration was completed with precision, preserving a vital piece of history. The Serpent River project allowed us to demonstrate our expertise through the complete mechanical refurbishment of two horizontal turbine units. We began by dismantling and thoroughly inspecting all major components. Following this, we created detailed drawings of the existing parts to ensure precise refurbishment and accurate reassembly. Soo Foundry and Machine provided both shop fabrication and on-site installation of access platforms and ladders at a remote hydroelectric plant in Northern Ontario. Our team accessed the work area using an engineered man basket mounted on a mobile crane and utilized a barge to stage the necessary tools. This approach ensured safe and efficient execution of the project in a challenging location.
