One of the main types of wood we sell is thermally treated pine (thermo-treated pine). Through thermal treatment, the wood significantly improves certain properties. The water absorption rate is greatly reduced, as the thermal treatment breaks the capillarity of the wood fiber, so it can no longer absorb moisture. In this way, the wood can withstand much longer when exposed to the elements, allowing you to enjoy a terrace for many years. The exotic essences most often used for decks are Ipe (Brazilian walnut), Massaranduba, Cumaru, each with its properties. To give you an idea of the qualities of each, you can study the graph below. To maintain its fresh appearance, wood requires periodic maintenance, annually or even twice a year, at the beginning of the cold season and after the cold season. The treatments applied to the wood are either oils, the most commonly used, or outdoor varnishes. Each of these ways of treating wood has certain advantages but also disadvantages. Oil is a solution that penetrates the fiber but does not create a protective film. Thus, the wood is more exposed to UV rays, and over a relatively short period of time, a few months, it will begin to change color, becoming grayer and losing the intensity of its original color. Therefore, cleaning and reapplying the treatment at relatively short intervals is necessary, as mentioned earlier, every 6-12 months. Varnishes for wood, on the other hand, create a protective film, which depending on its quality, can keep the wood protected for up to several years. However, the downside of this style of wood treatment is that when the film ages, it begins to peel, making the deck look unsightly. To reapply a treatment, mechanical cleaning of this aged varnish film is necessary.
