Construction Materials-Other Building Materials
Plastic templates are a relatively new product, and they may not yet be widely promoted in the construction industry. However, many organizations and governments are vigorously promoting this green product, and some have even mandated its use. Regardless of the promotion, what builders are still concerned about is how to do more with less, which means reducing costs.
In addition to protecting the environment, the significant advantage of plastic templates is their reusability. The more times they are used, the more costs are saved, leading to greater cost savings. So, how can using plastic templates help save 50% of costs?
A previous case involved the Zhengzhou China State Construction Seventh Engineering Division's Guanhua International Project. At the time of signing the contract, the budget was over 3 million yuan, based on the budget for wooden templates. After the upper floors were topped out, only over 1 million yuan was spent, achieving a budget saving of over 50%.
To save costs, the first key point is that the product must meet standards. If the product does not meet standards, as long as it stays within budget, there’s little hope for cost saving, and one might as well stick to using wooden templates.
Secondly, construction site management is crucial. Since plastic templates are new products, some carpenters may not have used them before, and compared to wooden templates, plastic templates might be a bit heavier, which workers may not prefer. If workers are reluctant to use them, they may express negative sentiments about the product. We have encountered these issues before, and these remarks sound quite familiar—similar situations occurred when wooden templates were being promoted. The promotion of new products will inevitably have a transition period, but this is the trend of the times. If the site insists on using them, they will get used to it.
Another significant issue is waste, which is also related to construction management. Sometimes, some plastic templates can still be used, but when workers see new boards, they may be unwilling to use the old ones, leading to significant waste. However, the management method employed by the China State Construction Seventh Engineering Division is very effective. They allow two buildings to use plastic templates simultaneously and compare the waste between the two sides. If there is a considerable difference, it indicates that one side is not managing well. In such cases, they can directly address the labor to see how to handle the situation. Having a comparison encourages workers to be more careful during use, as they will be concerned about generating waste. As a result, the cost savings for both buildings reached over 50%.
Many people often ask me how many times plastic templates can be reused. This question is difficult to answer because the number of reuses directly depends on the construction team. Under normal wear and tear, 30 times is certainly possible, and there are even cases of 50 times, depending on how they are used. If they are carelessly thrown or dropped, I cannot guarantee anything. Therefore, the premise for achieving 30 reuses is normal usage wear and tear, not reckless waste.
