Reliability Verification of the Tunnel Escape Pipe
Test Purpose
The feasibility of using the new tunnel escape pipe for emergency rescue during highway tunnel collapses is demonstrated by conducting impact tests on tunnel escape pipes and steel pipes of similar dimensions.
Test Materials
1. Q235 spiral seam submerged arc welded steel pipe, specifications Φ620×10. Yield strength σ1=215GPa, Elastic modulusE1=210MPa; Poisson's ratio ν1=0.25.
2. Tunnel escape pipe (molecular weight about 2.5 million), specifications Φ800×30mm, Yield strength σ1=3.7GPa, Elastic modulusE1=700MPa; Poisson's ratio ν1=0.42.
Test Requirements and Methods
Using steel pipes and tunnel escape pipes of similar dimensions, a heavy object will be freely released from a height H of 10m above the top of the circular pipe to conduct comparative impact tests, verifying the reliability of the tunnel escape pipe.
1. The impact test piece is a block of granite, with an initial diameter of0.67m. The parameters of the rock body are: Elastic modulusE=40MPa; Poisson's ratio: ν1=0.2; Density ρ1=2500kg/m3; Rock block weightW=400kg.
2. The circular pipe is placed on a smooth sandbag layer, with a thickness of250mm, and the width exceeds that of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
The thin-walled circular pipe used for tunnel construction escape is freely placed on a smooth cushion layer. When impacted by falling rocks, the bottom of the circular pipe primarily experiences vertical and horizontal friction constraints from the cushion layer. The distance from the impact test piece to the top of the circular pipe mainly depends on the excavation height of the tunnel cross-section. In this experiment, the maximum height from the center top of the tunnel to the top of the circular pipe is taken as H of 10m, and the block is freely released to conduct impacts on both the tunnel escape pipe and the steel pipe. The experimental results show that after being impacted, the tunnel escape pipe ejects the stone with almost no damage, demonstrating good impact resistance; while the steel pipe gets crushed and deformed upon impact.

Due to the lightweight nature of the tunnel escape pipe, it is convenient for disassembly and transportation; the pipe has good toughness and high impact strength, instantaneously deforming under strong external impact, absorbing a large amount of impact energy, and then quickly restoring its original shape, providing extremely safe assurance for emergency rescue during highway tunnel construction; the pipe has high ring stiffness, good pressure resistance, and is not easily deformed, with its load-bearing capacity and resistance to environmental damage far exceeding that of general pipes during tunnel construction collapses.
