Construction Materials-Other Building Materials
Plastic formwork is a relatively new product, and its promotion in the construction industry may not yet be very widespread. However, many organizations and governments are actively promoting this green product, with some even mandating its use. Regardless of how it is promoted, what construction companies care about most is how to accomplish more with lower costs, which means reducing expenses.
In addition to protecting the environment, a significant advantage of plastic formwork is its potential for reuse. The more times it is used, the more costs can be saved. Let’s discuss how using plastic formwork can achieve a cost reduction of 50%.
A previous case involved the Zhengzhou China Construction Seventh Engineering Division’s Guanhai International Project. At the time of signing the contract, the budget was over 3 million, which was based on the budget for wooden formwork. However, after the upper floors were completed, only a little over 1 million was used, achieving a budget savings of more than 50%.
To save costs, one crucial point is that the product must meet quality standards. If the product does not meet standards, as long as it stays within the budget, it’s already a blessing; don’t expect to save costs and just stick to using wooden formwork.
Secondly, construction site management is important. Since plastic formwork is a new product, some carpenters may not have used it before. Compared to wooden formwork, plastic formwork may also be heavier, which workers may not prefer. If they are reluctant to use it, they may express negative opinions about the product. We have encountered these issues before, and these complaints sound quite familiar; similar situations arose during the promotion of wooden formwork back in the day. The promotion of new products will inevitably have a transition period, but this is the trend of the times. If the construction site insists on using it, they will adapt.
Another major issue is waste, which is also related to construction management. Sometimes, even if some plastic formwork can still be used, workers may refuse to use old boards if they see new ones, leading to significant waste. The management approach of China Construction Seventh Engineering Division is commendable; they allow two buildings to simultaneously use plastic formwork and then compare the two sides to see which one wastes more. If there is a significant difference, it indicates that one side is not performing well, and this situation can be addressed directly with the labor team. With a comparison in place, workers will be more cautious during use, concerned about waste. As a result, the cost savings for the two buildings exceeded 50%.
Many people ask me how many times plastic formwork can be reused. This question is difficult to answer because the number of cycles is directly related to the construction team. If used normally, it can definitely withstand 30 uses, and there are instances of 50 uses, depending on how it is handled. However, if it is improperly discarded or mishandled, I cannot guarantee its usability. Therefore, the premise for achieving 30 uses is that it must be subjected to normal wear and tear, not reckless waste.
