Plastic formwork is a relatively new product that may not yet be widely promoted in the construction industry. However, many organizations and government bodies are actively advocating for this green product, and some have even mandated its use. Nevertheless, regardless of how much promotion occurs, construction companies are primarily concerned with how to accomplish more with lower costs, that is, reducing expenses. In addition to its environmental benefits, one of the significant advantages of plastic formwork is its number of cycles; the more it is used, the more expenses can be saved, which translates to greater cost reductions. So, how can using plastic formwork lead to a 50% cost savings? A previous case was the Zhengzhou China State Construction Seventh Engineering Division's Guanhua International Project. At the time of signing the contract, the budget was over 3 million, based on the budget for wooden formwork. After the upper floors were capped, only a little over 1 million was used, achieving a budget saving of over 50%. To save costs, the primary point is that the product must meet quality standards. If the product is substandard, as long as it stays within budget, there is no hope of saving costs—just stick to using wooden formwork. Secondly, construction management on site is crucial. Since plastic formwork is a new product, some carpenters may not have experience with it, and compared to wooden formwork, plastic formwork can be slightly heavier, which workers may dislike. If they are resistant to using it, they may express negative opinions about the product. We have encountered these issues before, and it sounds familiar; similar situations arose when wooden formwork was being promoted. The promotion of new products will inevitably have a transition period, but this is an unstoppable trend, and if the site insists on using it, the workers will adapt. Another significant issue is waste, which is also related to construction management. Sometimes, even when plastic formwork can still be used, workers may prefer to use new boards instead of the old ones, leading to considerable waste. The management approach of China State Construction Seventh Engineering Division is very effective; they have two buildings using plastic formwork simultaneously and compare them to see which has more waste. If there is a significant difference, it indicates that one side is not managing well, and this situation can be directly addressed with labor management to see how to resolve it. The comparison encourages workers to be more cautious during usage, as they will worry about generating excess waste. Consequently, with both buildings, cost savings can exceed 50%. Many people ask me how many times plastic formwork can be reused. This is a difficult question to answer, as the number of cycles is directly related to the construction team’s practices. With normal wear and tear from proper use, 30 cycles are definitely achievable, and it can go up to 50 cycles, depending on how it is utilized. If it is misused or abused, I cannot guarantee any specific number; therefore, the premise for achieving 30 cycles is normal wear from proper use, not reckless waste.
