HDPE Steel Belt Corrugated Pipe
Our country is a developing nation, and the infrastructure for public works has historically been quite poor. Therefore, in recent years, substantial investments have been made across the country to construct drainage networks (including sewage and stormwater drainage systems), providing unprecedented market opportunities for the development of buried plastic drainage pipes in China. It is estimated that the demand in 2010 will reach 1,000,000 tons.
PE steel belt corrugated pipes are categorized into all-plastic pipes and PE steel belt corrugated pipes based on the materials used. All-plastic pipes are further divided into solid wall pipes and various structured wall pipes (such as double-wall corrugated pipes, etc.). Steel-reinforced plastic pipes also have several different structural designs, but primarily refer to steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes (Steel Reinforced Polyethylene Corrugated Pipe, abbreviated as “SRPCP”). Currently, in the field of buried plastic drainage pipes, the mainstream products in the small to medium diameter range (below 800mm) are PVC, PE, and PP double-wall corrugated pipes, while in the large diameter range (above 800mm), the mainstream products are steel belt corrugated buried drainage pipes.
The production technology and equipment for PE steel belt corrugated pipes were independently developed in our country in 2003, with Sichuan Jinshi Dongfang New Materials Equipment Co., Ltd. being one of the participating research and development units. Since the birth of steel-reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes in China, they have rapidly gained popularity nationwide due to their high ring stiffness, low material consumption, and cost advantages.
1. High Ring Stiffness Large Diameter Buried Plastic Drainage Pipe
There is a huge market demand for large diameter buried drainage pipes, especially in a vast country like China with a large population and a historically underdeveloped infrastructure. Due to the often insufficient ring stiffness of all-plastic winding structured wall pipes, large diameter buried drainage pipes have traditionally utilized concrete pipes. However, concrete pipes have poor corrosion resistance and sealing performance, posing a challenge for environmental protection and sustainable development. The emergence of high ring stiffness steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes makes it possible to replace concrete pipes with large diameter plastic buried drainage pipes. This pipe material can adapt to various usage conditions for drainage pipes, such as in situations requiring significant burial depth, very shallow burial depth with heavy traffic loads, and coastal areas with corrosive soil. Currently, the diameter range of steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes produced in China is 600~2,200mm, with SN8, SN12.5, and SN16.3 ring stiffness grades available, providing the most common ring stiffness of SN12.5, with the potential to exceed SN16 if needed.
2. Significant Material Savings and Cost Reduction :
Saving materials and reducing resource consumption are fundamental requirements for achieving sustainable development, and lowering costs is also crucial for large-scale construction projects in developing countries. The outstanding advantage of steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes is that they can significantly save material costs while achieving high performance. It is well known that a technological innovation that can reduce material consumption by 10% is usually considered a significant achievement. In comparison to all-plastic winding structured wall pipes, steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes can reduce material consumption by half while meeting the same diameter and ring stiffness requirements. This is because, in steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes, polyethylene mainly provides corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance, while the steel belt mainly provides ring stiffness. Since the elastic modulus of steel is about 200 times greater than that of polyethylene, the ring stiffness achieved by compressing thin steel belts into steel ribs far exceeds that of a thick polyethylene structure layer, thus requiring significantly less polyethylene to meet the required ring stiffness.
As shown in the table above, the ring stiffness of steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes/ Puyang corrugated pipes is significantly higher than that of all-plastic winding structured wall pipes and is also lighter (the weight per meter ratio is 0.35~0.61). In the weight per meter of steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes, nearly half is the weight of polyethylene and adhesive resin, while the other half is the weight of the steel belt. Due to nearly half of the total weight reduction and the fact that the price of carbon steel belts is about half that of polyethylene, steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes have a clear cost advantage over all-plastic winding structured wall pipes.
3. PE Steel Belt Corrugated Pipe is Firmly Bonded and Corrosion and Abrasion Resistant:
The key to the success of metal reinforcement is whether the steel-plastic bond is strong. The independently developed production process in our country ensures a strong bond through two means: one is the use of pre-coated adhesive resin on the steel belt as a bonding layer between polyethylene and carbon steel, and the other is controlling the temperature, pressure, and time parameters during the production molding process to ensure that all layers of steel and plastic are welded at appropriate temperatures. Test results have proven that the structural integrity of steel belt reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipes is reliable. For example, when the pipe is radially compressed by 30% (according to the product standard's “ring flexibility” test, compressing the corrugated top of the pipe or using special attachments to directly compress the valley part of the pipe), its structural form remains unchanged without cracks or delamination of the steel-plastic bond.
Another key point for achieving metal reinforcement is to protect the easily corroded metal layer. In the structural design of this product, the steel ribs are completely covered by polyethylene inside and out, and the surfaces in contact with the conveyed liquid and surrounding soil and groundwater are covered with a certain thickness of polyethylene layer. Therefore, the corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance of the PE steel belt corrugated pipe are also guaranteed.
