**Rubber and Plastic**
Rubber and plastic are collective terms for the rubber and plastic industries, both of which are by-products of petroleum. They share the same source but differ in physical properties and applications during the manufacturing process. The most common use for rubber is in tires, while plastic has become increasingly essential in daily life due to technological advancements and market demands.
**Product Characteristics**
1. When rubber products are formed under high pressure, the cohesive force inherent to elastomers cannot be eliminated. When the product is demolded, it often experiences unstable shrinkage (the shrinkage rate of rubber varies with the type of rubber). It must stabilize after a period. Therefore, from the design stage of a rubber product, whether in formulation or mold, careful calculations must be made; otherwise, product dimensions may become unstable, resulting in poor product quality.
2. Rubber is a thermoplastic elastomer, while plastic is thermosetting. The curing temperature range for rubber varies significantly depending on the type of vulcanizing agent used and can even be affected by climate changes and indoor temperature and humidity. Thus, the production conditions of rubber products need to be adjusted accordingly; otherwise, product quality may vary.
3. The closed-cell structure of rubber and plastic effectively prevents heat transfer.
4. The thermal conductivity does not exceed 0.034 W/m·k at 0°C.
5. The surface heat release coefficient is high, reaching 9 W/mk.
6. Exhibits excellent water vapor permeability resistance with a moisture resistance of μ≥5,000, forming a "built-in" waterproof layer, making the insulation board both an insulating layer and a moisture-proof layer.
**Flame Retardant Performance**
Due to the unique chemical structure of rubber and plastic materials, they are flammable products that produce molten drips during combustion. To meet flame retardant requirements, the following methods are commonly adopted internationally:
1. Increase the oxygen index. The oxygen index of a material refers to the minimum oxygen concentration required to sustain combustion. A higher oxygen index indicates better flame retardant performance. An oxygen index >26 will self-extinguish in air, while an oxygen index >32 will be difficult to ignite in air. Common methods to increase the oxygen index of flammable materials include: copolymerization — introducing elements like X, P, N into the molecular chain through copolymerization reactions, which produce small molecules like HX, NH3 during combustion that dilute small-chain olefins and alkanes, inhibiting combustion reactions; grafting — applying flame-retardant monomers to flammable molecular chains through grafting reactions to enhance flame retardancy; cross-linking — forming a network structure between linear molecular chains through cross-linking reactions to improve the oxygen index. The method used to enhance the oxygen index of rubber and plastic materials is cross-linking.
2. Adding flame retardant additives to isolate combustion products from air and flammable gases, enhancing product flame retardant performance. Flame retardant additives are divided into two types: halogenated additives and metal hydroxide flame retardants.
Halogenated additives refer to flame retardants containing halogens, such as chlorine and bromine. Under flame action, they release inert gases that isolate oxygen, thereby achieving flame retardancy. However, under high temperatures, halogenated flame retardants may generate a large amount of toxic and corrosive gases due to incomplete combustion of their thermal decomposition products, causing secondary pollution. Although they prevent combustion, the concentration of smoke produced can be high, which can harm human health.
Metal hydroxide flame retardants contain hydroxides like Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2. These additives absorb heat and dehydrate at temperatures above 200°C, carrying away combustion heat. The oxides produced during dehydration form a strong and dense flame retardant barrier on the material surface, providing thermal insulation to reduce combustion rates and prevent flame spread, achieving flame suppression without producing molten drips and generating low smoke concentration, making them ideal flame retardant additives.
NBR-PVC acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber is a polar material. Adding metal hydroxide flame retardants greatly reduces the material's physical and chemical properties, increasing the scrap rate and making continuous production impossible. Furthermore, domestic rubber and plastic manufacturers often have to use halogenated flame retardants due to production cost constraints, leading to the generation of large amounts of black, choking toxic gases during combustion of low-cost rubber and plastic materials. EPDM ethylene-propylene rubber is a non-polar material; when metal hydroxide flame retardants are added, its physical properties are significantly improved. Although the cost is high, the scrap rate is low and the smoke density during combustion is low.
