Toyota and CATL Partner to Produce Hybrid Vehicle Batteries in Indonesia
On April 20, 2026, PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) announced a strategic cooperation with Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), to produce hybrid car batteries locally in Indonesia. The project's total investment amount is 13 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately 8.2 billion US dollars).
According to the agreement, battery production will be carried out by CATL's factory in Karawang, West Java. The factory will not only assemble battery packs, but also manufacture core components such as battery cells and battery modules. The production of related components is planned to start in the second half of this year.

Nandi Julyanto, President Director of TMMIN, stated on the same day in Tangerang, Banten Province, at PIK 2 (Pantai Indah Kapuk 2): “Today, we proudly announce our strategic partnership with CATL in Indonesia. Through this collaboration, we will deepen the localization of hybrid electric vehicle battery production; battery cells and modules previously imported will now be manufactured locally by Indonesian talent.”
Nandi Julyanto said that TMMIN will become the first Toyota subsidiary in ASEAN to export batteries to the global market, a move that is significant for the company. He emphasized that localization is a process that requires collaboration among multiple parties and needs to be advanced step by step, which not only helps to enhance local parts content but also lays the foundation for building a key electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.
Ni Zheng, Executive President of CATL’s Japan Business Group, welcomed this collaboration at the same event and noted that the company’s factory in Indonesia is already operational. He stated: “Today’s milestone is merely a new starting point. Moving forward, CATL and Toyota will continue to join hands to jointly expand our businesses in Indonesia and across Asia.”
This cooperation means that Toyota hybrid vehicles sold in Indonesia in the future will be equipped with batteries produced locally. However, despite achieving partial localization, manufacturers are currently unable to determine the specific impact of this move on the final vehicle price.
