Nordic Chemical Launches PE Technology Achieving Exceptional Toughness and Processability in Packaging
Borealis has launched the groundbreaking Borstar® Nextension polyethylene (PE) technology, representing a significant leap forward in polyolefin innovation.
Implement thinning and support recycling design.
Based on the proven performance of Borstar® technology, the new Borstar Nextension PE platform employs a proprietary single-site catalyst developed by Borealis. This breakthrough technology heralds a new era of advanced polyethylene solutions, offering exceptional toughness, sealing performance, and enhanced processability for packaging solutions, thus enabling downgauging, improving cost efficiency, and supporting design for recyclability to meet the critical needs of today's packaging industry.
The Borstar Nextension PE technology sets a new standard by providing a single-material solution that can replace existing multi-material products, making it easier to classify and recycle at the end of their life cycle. Crucially, this supports the packaging industry in achieving the recycling and waste reduction targets outlined in the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
“This technological transformation paves the way for more circular, high-performance, and resource-efficient packaging solutions."Erik Van Praet, Senior Vice President of Innovation and Technology at Borealis, said."It emphasizes our strategic commitment to sustainable innovation, driven by ongoing investments in cutting-edge research and development. ."
Introducing next-generation development materials.
Borealis has launched Borstar Nextension PE technology, which uses two high-performance developed materials specifically tailored to meet the changing demands of the market.
An advanced solution with twice the toughness of first-generation metallocene PE materials, while maintaining stiffness and excellent processing performance, including superior bubble stability and throughput. With its unique mechanical properties and strong potential for downgauging, this new material enables more sustainable, fully recyclable packaging with excellent performance characteristics. It is designed for industrial and food packaging applications, making it ideal for Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) and frozen food packaging.
An advanced solution with a breakthrough sealing profile has a sealing initiation temperature more than 15% lower compared to the first generation of metallocene PE. Combined with the material's excellent mechanical properties, it enables faster packaging speeds and superior heat seal performance, making it ideal for lamination, FFS, and food packaging.
“Borstar Nextension PE technology will expand our product portfolio with efficient and recyclable solutions."Craig Arnold, Executive Vice President of Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions, and Basic Chemicals, added."This is just the beginning of a powerful innovation pipeline that will meet the needs of customers in multiple industries.
K 2025Visitors will have the opportunity at the Borealis and Borouge booth.Hall 6, Booth A43Understand the new Borstar Nextension PE development materials and discuss how these material grades can help them achieve sustainability and performance goals.
The new Borstar Nextension PE technology complements the Borstar Nextension polypropylene (PP) technology launched in 2022.
