Lummus' PP Technology Powers Vioneo's Green Methanol-Based Plastics Plant
Global process technology and value-driven energy solutions provider Lummus Technology announced that Vioneo has selected its Novolen® polypropylene (PP) technology for a new grassroots plant in Antwerp, Belgium.
The factory will become part of the Vioneo complex, and once completed, it will be the world's first industrial-scale fossil-free plastic production complex based on green methanol. The complex will also achieve high electrification using renewable electricity and use renewable hydrogen as a key component of its operations.
Using 100% fully separated green acrylic and ethylene as raw materials.
The capacity of this first factory is 200 KTA, using 100% separated green propylene and ethylene as raw materials to produce various grades of polypropylene. With high-purity raw materials and mature technology, the polypropylene will serve as a direct substitute for fossil-based alternatives. The produced plastics will be fully traceable, and CO2Negative, allowing customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, said:Vioneo’s goal to provide the world’s first fossil-free polypropylene facility is bold and ambitious, and we are honored to support this goal.。“Our proven polypropylene polymerization technology will enable Vioneo to produce high-performance, plug-and-play polypropylene grades through a low-emission process without compromising quality or flexibility.。”
Vioneo CEO Alex Hogan said: "Vioneo is driving the transformation of the plastics industry by demonstrating that large-scale, clean production using green methanol-derived raw materials is economically viable.。“We are partnering with Lummus Technology to license their leading Novolen® polypropylene technology for our Antwerp plant, which forms the foundation of this vision. This world’s first plant will use fully certified green propylene and ethylene from industrially proven methanol-to-olefins technology to produce a range of high-quality, directly bio-based polypropylene grades, significantly advancing the sustainable plastics economy.
Provide reduction to net negative carbon dioxide emissions
Lummus’s scope includes technology licensing, process design package, support during the front-end engineering design phase, and catalyst supply throughout ongoing operations.
Lummus' Novolen PP technology is part of the Verdene™ technology suite, which consists of mature technologies used by sustainable polymer producers to produce fully bio-based polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and superabsorbent polymers using bio-based raw materials. By sequestering carbon monoxide, the suite reduces carbon dioxide emissions to a net negative.2The carbon-based carbon in the polymer itself. The function of this polymer is the same as that of polymers produced from conventional hydrocarbon sources.
Vioneo is owned by AP Moller Holding. Vioneo was launched by A.P. Moller in 2024 and is committed to transforming plastic production by manufacturing fossil-free plastic resins, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with plastic production.
