Japan Trade Negotiator to Visit United States, Urging Rapid Implementation of Agreed Auto Tariff
Japan's chief trade negotiator, Ryoji Akazawa, stated that he plans to visit Washington starting Tuesday to urge President Trump to sign an executive order to implement the agreed 15% automobile tariff.
Last month, the United States reached a trade agreement with Japan, reducing the tariff on imported Japanese automobiles from the previous 27.5% to 15%. Tariffs on other Japanese goods will also be reduced from 25% to 15%.
Akazawa Ryoma told the Japanese Diet, "We will urge the United States to ensure that an executive order is signed as soon as possible regarding the agreed tariffs on automobiles and auto parts."
Regarding the issue of "stacking," where goods may be subject to multiple tariffs, Akazawa Ryoma also stated that Japan hopes to ensure that goods already subjected to tariffs of 15% or higher will not be affected by an additional 15% tariff.
