Ford Adjusts Electrification Strategy: Focus on Range-Extended Technology, Affordable Pickup Trucks, and Full Product Line Update by 2029
Ford Motor Company is making a strategic shift in its electrification path, emphasizing that the transition to range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs) is not a retreat from the pure electric vehicle (EV) route, but a proactive choice based on customer needs. Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Ford Model e, stated on the "Daily Drive" podcast on April 15 that this strategy aims to combine the experience of pure electric driving with fuel backup power to meet the practical needs of pickup truck users in high-demand scenarios such as towing and load carrying.

Fricke pointed out that the market feedback for the first-generation F-150 Lightning showed that many consumers expected pure electric vehicles to have the performance of traditional fuel-powered pickups, but there was a gap between their expectations and the actual limitations of electric vehicles in terms of range and work performance under load. He emphasized that the F-150 Lightning was not a "failure"; its sales not meeting expectations mainly reflected the overall market's slower-than-expected acceptance of electric vehicles and increased price sensitivity, rather than any defects in the product itself.
In addition, Fryk defended Ford's reservation and deposit system, stating that although the mechanism is not perfect, it has provided effective signals of market demand for models such as the Maverick, Bronco, and Mach-E. He said Ford will continue to flexibly apply such mechanisms in the future based on specific products and market segments. Looking ahead, Ford will prioritize the affordability and scenario suitability of vehicles, and plans to launch a midsize electric pickup with a price of around $30,000.
Meanwhile, Ford has confirmed that it will complete a major overhaul of its product lineup by 2029. According to the company's official statement, by then, Ford will have updated 80% of its model lineup in the North American market and 70% of its main sales products globally. This plan includes the 15th generation F-150 full-size pickup and its heavy-duty version, the F-Series Super Duty, with both new models expected to debut around 2028. Previously, in February 2025, Ford had stated that the new generation F-150 would be released in 2027, but the timeline has now been adjusted.
Notably, Ford has abandoned its original plan for a full-size all-electric F-150 model but retained the "Lightning" name for the upcoming EREV hybrid version, the specific details of which have not yet been disclosed.
On the platform technology front, Ford is advancing the development of its next-generation vehicle architecture called UEV. This platform utilizes high-pressure die-casting technology, which helps simplify body structure and reduce weight, while also supporting more efficient electric drive systems and advanced driver-assistance features. Ford plans to launch a midsize pickup truck based on the UEV platform in 2029 and expand this platform to future hybrid vehicle production.
Sales data shows a slight decline in F-Series pickup truck sales in recent years. In 2025, a total of 828,842 units were sold in the U.S. market, down 0.7% year-on-year; in Q1 2026, sales amounted to 159,901 units, a 16% decrease year-on-year. The current 14th-generation F-150 was launched in 2020 and underwent a mid-cycle refresh in September 2023. Facing competitive pressure from Chevrolet’s planned launch of the all-new Silverado 1500 within 2026, the F-150’s market position may face further challenges.
Frick also mentioned that Ford is actively managing supply chain disruptions and tariff risks, benefiting from its robust domestic manufacturing capacity in the United States, and implementing a proactive recall strategy to continuously enhance product quality and customer trust.
