CATL and Rio Tinto Sign Cooperation Agreement to Promote Mining Electrification and Circular Economy

On March 12, CATL announced that it had recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rio Tinto to establish a partnership. The two parties will deepen cooperation in three major directions: electrification strategy development and innovation, supply chain and circular economy, and business and cooperation mechanisms. They will jointly seize the new industrial opportunities brought about by the low-carbon transition.

According to the Memorandum of Cooperation, both parties will focus on the core direction of electrification applications in mining operations, leveraging their respective industrial advantages to conduct comprehensive explorations. At the same time, both sides will also delve into the value of battery material recycling, exploring commercial implementation paths for the circular development of key mineral resources, studying circular economy practice models and diversified cooperation mechanisms, and promoting the greening of the entire chain of mineral resource development and utilization.

In this collaboration, CATL will fully leverage its technological expertise and industrial strengths in battery technology, system integration, and new energy solutions to provide core support for Rio Tinto Group’s electrification upgrade of mining operations, helping enhance operational efficiency, accelerate carbon reduction, and drive the full electrification transformation of mining production processes. With over 150 years of history, Rio Tinto’s business spans exploration, mining, and processing of critical minerals such as iron ore, copper, aluminum, and lithium, providing rich mining scenarios and resource foundations for the implementation of this partnership.
