Cathay Biotech Officially Enters Another 100 Billion Market!

Bio-based Energy and Materials 2025-09-02 15:37:58

On August 28th, the world's first bio-based composite refrigerated container, made with bio-based polyamide continuous fiber composites produced by "Cathay Biotech," was officially delivered at the Shanghai Universal Qingdao Container Factory.

This product is provided byThree-party joint creation,"Cathay Biotech" produces bio-based polyamide continuous fiber composites, and two other partner units. They are respectively:

Sinotrans Container Shipping Co., Ltd.:A wholly-owned subsidiary of China Merchants Group's China Merchants Energy Shipping, engaged in comprehensive logistics services for container liner shipping.

Thirty refrigerated containers made with Cathay Biotech's bio-based polyamide continuous fiber composites are neatly arrayed, marking a critical step forward for China in the field of green logistics equipment. This breakthrough not only fills the domestic gap in the application of bio-based materials in the refrigerated container sector but also provides a replicable "China solution" for the global container industry's low-carbon transition.

In this delivery of refrigerated containers, biosynthesized polyamide continuous fiber composite materials independently developed by Cathay Biotech are applied for the first time to key components of the container (such as the inner roof panel and inner side panels).

The material, with low carbon and high performance as its core advantages, also features lightweight, high strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Its density is only 1/4 that of steel and 2/3 that of aluminum, yet it can achieve mechanical properties comparable to or even better than those of metal materials.

Technical Highlights:

  • Lightweight Revolution: By "replacing steel and aluminum with plastics," the weight of containers is significantly reduced, lowering transportation energy consumption and enhancing logistics efficiency.

  • Non-spraying technology: The material surface can meet functional requirements without additional treatment, reducing production costs and environmental pollution.

  • Low-carbon and environmentally friendly: The total lifecycle carbon emissions are significantly lower than those of traditional metal materials, in line with the global carbon neutrality trend.

  • Strong corrosion resistance: Performs stably in harsh environments such as high humidity and low temperatures, extending product lifespan.

The use of bio-based polyamide composite materials in container manufacturing offers the container industry a brand new path that combines both economic efficiency and environmental friendliness.

  • Economic benefits: Lightweight design reduces transportation costs, and the no-paint process reduces maintenance expenses.

  • Environmental benefits: Reduction of carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle, helping enterprises achieve their "dual carbon" goals.

  • Industry demonstration: Providing a replicable "plastic instead of steel" model for the construction, new energy, and transportation logistics sectors.

According to the "Global Container Construction Market Report (2024)," the global container construction market size will reach 18 billion USD (approximately 128.6 billion RMB) in 2024, representing a year-on-year growth of 22%.

The year 2024,China ContainerThe export volume was 5.45 million units, a year-on-year increase of 135.93%; the export value was 17.039 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 105.83%.

The official delivery of this bio-based composite refrigerated container marks Kaisai Bio's formal entry into the trillion-yuan container market.

This year, Cathay Biotech has achieved several milestone breakthroughs in the field of bio-based composite materials.

In January, the RAP-AT1 active air temperature-controlled container, developed by Haier Biomedical’s subsidiary Qingdao Honghu, passed the airworthiness review of the Civil Aviation Administration of China and obtained the Technical Standard Order Authorization (CTSOA), officially entering the commercial stage. The container uses continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic bio-based polyamide composite materials from Cathay Biotech.

On February 12, Anhui Kaishai Times Composite Materials Co., Ltd.Jointly established by Cathay Biotech, CATL's investment platform Puchen Capital, and Calay Composites.Registered capital of 150 million RMB. Mainly engaged in the research and development, production, and sales of bio-based composite materials for use in battery housings, energy storage enclosures, automotive components, and other transportation-related products.

On March 24, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) website's "Hundred Major Projects in Emerging Industries" column published an article titled "China Merchants Group Leads Innovation Breakthrough in Bio-based Polyamide, Creating a New Engine for the Bioeconomy." The article highlights China Merchants Group's investment in Kaisa Bio, which has developed a thermoplastic bio-based polyamide composite material with a glass fiber content exceeding 70%.

April 9th,Hefei Qinghe New Materials Co., Ltd., jointly funded by Cathay Biotech and Korea’s 3P.COM, has been officially established. 3P.COM possesses industry-leading innovative design and manufacturing capabilities in fiber-reinforced composites, green energy, and storage and transportation technologies, especially in the fields of hydrogen storage tanks and distribution pipelines.

May,China Merchants Kaisa Biomaterials (Hefei) Co., Ltd. announces a project for the annual production of 41,000 tons of bio-based composite materials. The total investment amounts to 468.5 million yuan, aiming to construct a project with an annual production capacity of 41,000 tons of bio-based composite materials.

On August 11, the Ningde Times-Kesai (Hefei) Bio-based Battery Case Manufacturing Base Project, undertaken by Anhui Kaixi Shidai, was launched. With a total investment of 500 million yuan, the project will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million sets of bio-based battery cases once fully operational.
