Breaking the Bottleneck of Hard-to-Recycle Plastics! Plastic Energy and TotalEnergies Launch Advanced Recycling Plant in France

Plastmatch Global Digest 2026-03-20 10:22:07

UK-based Plastic Energy and France’s TotalEnergies jointly announced the official commencement of operations at their joint venture advanced plastic recycling facility—TEPEAR (TotalEnergies Plastic Energy Advanced Recycling). Located at TotalEnergies’ Grandpuits zero-crude complex near Paris, the plant has an annual processing capacity of 15,000 tonnes and utilizes Plastic Energy’s proprietary advanced recycling technology to convert hard-to-recycle plastics into circular feedstock for producing new plastics.

Earlier this year, the plant successfully produced its first batch of TACOIL™ circular feedstock and is now fully operational, capable of producing circular feedstock from waste plastics.

Plastic Energy's proprietary TAC™ technology converts non-recyclable plastic waste, which would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated, into TACOIL™ — a recycled material that can replace conventional fossil-based feedstocks.

This recycled oil will be processed at TotalEnergies’ petrochemical site to produce plastics suitable for high-performance applications, including food-contact packaging, medical-grade materials, and other high-quality products. This industrial integration fully demonstrates how advanced recycling technologies can be scaled up for industrial application within the existing petrochemical value chain.

“The commissioning of the Grandpuits Recycling Plant is a significant milestone in Europe’s advanced recycling sector, demonstrating the advantages and effectiveness of Plastic Energy’s patented technology, the stability of its process, and the dedication and expertise of our outstanding team. We are honored to share this achievement with our partner TotalEnergies. When leading companies join forces to integrate their respective strengths and co-create scalable, sustainable solutions for the future of the plastics industry, we prove—through action—that anything is possible.” said Ian Temperton, CEO of Plastic Energy.

“The commissioning of France’s first advanced plastic recycling plant is a key milestone in our transformation of the Grandpuits site into a zero-crude complex. Technical support from Plastic Energy, along with the support of our partners Citeo and Paprec, is driving the emergence of a new plastic recycling industry in France,” commented Valérie Goff, Senior Vice President, Renewable Energy, Fuels & Chemicals at TotalEnergies.
