Breaking News! Suzhou Fuyang Chemical Explosion! Exclusive Analysis By Plastics World Of 4 Major Impacts On The Chlor-Alkali Industry Chain
On June 3, several netizens posted videos saying that an explosion had occurred at a factory in Suzhou, Jiangsu. In the videos, as firefighters were battling the blaze, a sudden explosion occurred inside the factory building, sending flames shooting into the sky and thick smoke billowing.

According to The Dahe Daily’s *Kanjian* reporter, a staff member from the Suzhou Emergency Management Bureau said that an explosion did indeed occur. Relevant departments are currently handling the situation at the scene, and no casualties have been reported so far.

According to Zhuansu Vision, the site of the incident was the chlor-alkali chemical plant in Suzhou (Fuyang, Hangzhou).
If the Suzhou (Hangzhou Fuyang) chlor-alkali chemical plant is forced to suspend production due to this explosion, the shutdown and reduced output of the chlor-alkali co-production chain—caustic soda, liquid chlorine, and PVC feedstocks—may lead to a contraction in supply, which could directly affect four major futures contracts in the chlor-alkali industry chain.
1. Main varieties directly affected
Sodium hydroxide (SA Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange) ★★★★★ Most significant impact
Caustic soda is produced by electrolyzing salt in chlor-alkali plants. East China (Jiangsu and Zhejiang) is the main sales region for caustic soda, and Fuyang is a spot distribution hub in Zhejiang. When operating rates are reduced or plants shut down, spot liquid caustic soda supply tightens, directly driving SA caustic soda futures higher. The largest downstream consumer of caustic soda is alumina, which indirectly transmits the impact to aluminum prices (SHFE aluminum, AL).
② PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride, V on DCE) ★★★★☆
Liquid chlorine is a core raw material for PVC via the calcium carbide and ethylene routes. After the plant shuts down, liquid chlorine sales decline, leading to a tight supply of PVC raw materials in East China. **PVC(V)** benefits the most, and Zhejiang is a major spot delivery region for PVC.
③ Soda Ash (same industry chain as SA, Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange SA, SA options) ★★★
Sodium hydroxide and soda ash both belong to the alkali chemical industry. The centralized maintenance of alkali plants will drive emotional linkage across the entire alkali industry chain. After the price increase of sodium hydroxide, some downstream sectors may turn to soda ash as a substitute, indirectly boosting soda ash (SA).
④ Ethylene Glycol (EG), Styrene (EB) (indirect slight increase) ★★
The cost of raw materials for ethylene-based PVC is linked to ethylene and ethylene glycol, pushing up costs along the industrial chain and causing slight fluctuations in the EG and EB futures markets.
2. Indirect transmission varieties
Shanghai Aluminum (SHFE): The largest consumer of caustic soda is alumina smelting (accounting for nearly 30% of caustic soda demand). The increase in caustic soda prices raises the production costs of electrolytic aluminum, indirectly supporting aluminum prices.
Brief logic
In a chlor-alkali unit, caustic soda and chlorine are co-produced: 1 ton of caustic soda is approximately equivalent to 0.88 ton of liquid chlorine. A single unit cannot produce only one product independently; when the plant is shut down, both caustic soda and liquid chlorine output decrease simultaneously, leading to chlorine feedstock shortages for PVC and caustic shortages for alumina. As a result, SA and V are relatively abundant, while AL is passively supported at the bottom.
