4.5 Million Tons! Wanhua Chemical Dominates Globally in MDI, Heavy Investment in Battery Materials Spurs New Storm
In just one month, Wanhua Chemical has made a series of moves: the Ningbo base has undergone shutdown maintenance, the Fujian technological transformation project has been approved, and the polyether production capacity has been comprehensively upgraded. Behind these actions is the strategic significance of this chemical giant consolidating its main business and laying out new tracks.
On November 5th, Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Isocyanate Co., Ltd.'s 1.5 million tons/year MDI technical transformation and capacity expansion project received environmental approval. On November 7th, Wanhua Chemical announced that the second phase of the Ningbo MDI facility (1 million tons/year) will shut down for maintenance for 55 days starting from November 15th. Meanwhile, the company disclosed details of its capacity expansion plans for polyether and ethylene oxide derivatives, with the capacity of regular soft foam polyether to be increased to 500,000 tons/year.

These three seemingly independent events actually outline the strategic layout of Wanhua Chemical: strengthening the advantages of the polyurethane industry chain through capacity adjustment and technological upgrading. On the other hand, SpecPlastics has noticed that Wanhua Chemical is also actively cultivating battery materials as a second growth curve.
01 Vertical integration of the polyurethane industry chain, building a moat with an integrated strategy.
Wanhua Chemical's recent intensive layout in the polyurethane sector demonstrates its determination to consolidate its leading position in the industry. The shutdown and maintenance of the Ningbo base, although an annual routine arrangement, is carried out during the upward cycle of MDI prices, reflecting the company's precise grasp of market supply and demand dynamics.
The continuous expansion of MDI production capacity is a core initiative for Wanhua to consolidate its global leadership position. The approval of the 1.5 million tons/year MDI technological transformation project at the Fujian base means that Wanhua will add 700,000 tons of capacity on top of the existing 800,000 tons facility, which is expected to be completed and put into operation by the second quarter of 2026. At that time, the company's total global MDI production capacity will jump from 3.8 million tons/year to 4.5 million tons/year, far exceeding that of international competitors like Covestro (approximately 1.77 million tons).

This capacity layout not only reflects the advantages of scale but also highlights technical strength. The MDI production process is complex and requires significant investment, which has long been monopolized by a few multinational giants. Through independent technological innovation, Wanhua has successfully broken down technical barriers and become an important disruptor in the global MDI market.
The comprehensive increase in polyether polyol production capacity has improved the layout of the polyurethane industry chain. Wanhua's expansion of polyether production focuses on high value-added areas: the capacity for ordinary soft foam polyether has increased from 300,000 tons/year to 500,000 tons/year, high resilience polyether has been raised from 100,000 tons/year to 120,000 tons/year, and additionally, new capacities of 50,000 tons/year for low solid content POP polyether and 100,000 tons/year for polyethylene glycol have been added.
This layout has made Wanhua the largest supplier of polyether products in China with the most comprehensive product range, achieving a complete layout from rigid foam to soft foam and from general to functional products, enabling the provision of customized one-stop polyether solutions for downstream customers.
The vertical integration strategy is Wanhua's core competitive advantage. The company has successfully overcome the bottleneck of key raw materials such as propylene oxide (PO), becoming the only enterprise in the world that masters three production technologies for PO. The PO facility at the Yantai Penglai Industrial Park has a single-unit capacity of 400,000 tons per year and utilizes the independently developed POCHP clean process, achieving zero carbon emissions.

The integration model of "raw materials - intermediates - products" has brought significant economies of scale and cost advantages. In 2024, although the polyurethane segment accounted for only 42% of the company's revenue, it contributed over 67% of the gross profit, becoming the pillar of the company's profitability.
02 Battery Materials: Strategic Attempts to Build a Second Growth Curve
On the basis of a stable core business, Wanhua Chemical is actively venturing into the battery materials sector, defining it as a "second venture," demonstrating its strategic determination to establish a new growth pillar.
In February 2025, Wanhua Chemical's next-generation battery materials industrial park, with a total investment of 16.8 billion yuan, broke ground in Haiyang, Yantai, Shandong. The park is planned to produce 500,000 tons/year of lithium iron phosphate cathode materials and 300,000 tons/year of artificial graphite anode materials. The first phase, a 100,000 tons/year lithium iron phosphate project, is scheduled to be put into production in June 2026, marking that Wanhua has established a complete lithium battery industry chain covering "cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, binders, and recycling."
Technological innovation is the foundation for Wanhua's expansion into new fields. The half-year report for 2025 shows that the company has made significant progress in the battery materials sector, with the fourth-generation lithium iron phosphate achieving mass production and the fifth generation reaching its initial design specification. This rapid iteration capability is attributed to Wanhua's long-term commitment to technological investment strategies.
However, the challenges in the lithium battery materials field cannot be underestimated. The industry has shifted from a "blue ocean" to a "red ocean," with China's cathode material shipments reaching 2.1 million tons from January to June 2025, a year-on-year increase of 53%. The industry is showing a "stronger get stronger" pattern. As a newcomer, Wanhua, despite having advantages in funding and chemical engineering processes, still needs time to accumulate customer recognition and brand building.
03 Dual-wheel Drive: Strategic Integration of Cycle Crossing and Future Positioning
Wanhua Chemical's dual-line layout reflects a balanced strategy: on one hand, consolidating existing advantages, and on the other, planning for future growth. These two aspects work together to build the company's ability to navigate through cycles.
The counter-cyclical investment strategy runs through two major business segments. In the polyurethane field, Wanhua has continued to invest during the industry's low point, with ongoing projects amounting to 63.2 billion yuan by the end of 2024, positioning itself ahead of the industry's recovery. Similarly, in the battery materials sector, the company chose to enter aggressively during a period of intensified competition, reflecting its long-term thinking.
Wanhua's development path, from breaking the international monopoly of MDI, to competing with international giants in the global market, and then to expanding into new energy materials, represents the upgrading process of China's chemical industry. The company is transitioning from a "polyurethane champion" to a comprehensive chemical giant.
Currently, Wanhua Chemical's strategic layout is facing a critical test period. The Fujian MDI technical transformation project is set to be operational in 2026, and the construction of the battery material industrial park is also accelerating. Whether the company can consolidate its dominance in polyurethane while successfully cultivating a second growth curve will determine if it can transition from being "China's Wanhua" to "the world's Wanhua."
