Sumitomo Chemical Completes Acquisition of Solvay Liquid Crystal Polymer Resin Business
Sumitomo Chemical, from Japan, has completed the acquisition of Syensqo’s liquid crystal polymer (LCP) pure resin business assets. By integrating Syensqo’s products and technologies through this acquisition, Sumitomo Chemical will strengthen its ability to meet emerging market demands, further expand the scale of its LCP business, and focus on applications in information and communications technology (ICT) and mobility sectors.
LCP is a super engineering plastic with excellent heat resistance, flowability, and dimensional precision, widely used in electronic components for personal computers, smartphones, and other devices. Leveraging its leading technological advantages in polymer materials and application R&D, Sumitomo Chemical continues to expand its LCP business to meet diverse market demands.
In recent years, driven by rising electricity demand and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, LCP materials have garnered significant market attention. They are suitable for applications such as power devices, next-generation millimeter-wave radar for autonomous driving, and high-capacity data center connectors, with the LCP market poised for further growth.
The LCP pure resin technology acquired by Sumitomo Chemical from Seiko is renowned for its superior heat resistance. By integrating Seiko’s product portfolio and technologies, Sumitomo Chemical will be better positioned to meet societal and market demands. Leveraging Seiko’s existing LCP R&D pipeline and manufacturing processes, Sumitomo Chemical plans to expand its product matrix, extending its business footprint beyond ICT and mobile mobility to a broader range of diversified application fields.
