Sabic Launches Ultem Su3102P Reactive Oligomer, Reshaping Aerospace Composite Manufacturing
The product has won the 2026 Edison Awards Gold Prize, precisely addressing critical industry challenges amid the surge in global air cargo volumes.

SABICSergi Monros, Vice President of the Specialized Polymer Business Unit, said: "With a significant increase in global passenger and freight air traffic, the aviation industry is under great pressure to increase capacity and output efficiency within existing plant sizes, while also considering cost, safety, and sustainability goals. The new Ultem oligomer can help design engineers create lighter, thinner, and more durable composite structural parts, improving manufacturing efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The addition of this new product to the Ultem portfolio continues the brand's long-standing successful application experience in the aerospace industry, and demonstrates..."SABICSteadfast investment in materials innovation.
The outstanding advantage of Ultem SU3102P oligomer is that the filler content can be as high as 50%, which is the only thermoplastic solution currently capable of achieving such a high addition concentration. In contrast, the conventional addition ratio of the industry standard material, reactive poly(ether sulfone) (rPES), is typically maintained at 7% to 12%.
This huge gap brings real performance gains: compared to rPES,SABICThe toughness-to-stiffness balance of this novel oligomer is improved by up to 140%, significantly enhancing the impact resistance, fracture resistance, and damage tolerance of composite materials. Improved component durability reduces maintenance time and operational costs, while further increasing aviation safety.
Even with high additive compatibility, this Ultem oligomer maintains low formulation viscosity, ensuring stable and efficient processing and effectively shortening the molding cycle. Composite manufacturers can increase the productivity and energy efficiency of thermoset composite prepregs by up to 30%.
This oligomer can be directly adapted to existing production processes, compatible with multiple thermosetting resin systems, without the need for high-cost equipment upgrades.
SABICAll Ultem series products, including SU3102P oligomer, possess the comprehensive excellent performance required for aerospace applications: outstanding mechanical strength, inherent flame retardancy, strong heat and chemical resistance, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), enabling long-term stability and durability in harsh aviation service environments.
The material is now available worldwide for sample applications and mass production, enabling aerospace manufacturing companies to quickly evaluate it and implement it in actual production processes.
