French Company Launches Algae-Based PLA Blend for 3D Printing and Home Design
French seaweed biorefining company Algaia and Normandy-based biopolymer producer NaturePlast have jointly announced the successful development of a new industrially compostable material derived from seaweed biomass by-products, marking their official entry into the 3D printing filament and home design sectors.
Under this collaboration model, Algaia provides COPAL, a by-product of its “Agris” raw material production line. NaturePlast then blends and modifies this material with polylactic acid (PLA) to create a new industrially compostable composite. This material has been validated through actual design projects and is suitable for 3D printing customized products such as lighting fixtures and interior decorations.
The core breakthrough of this collaboration lies in transforming biomass by-products from seaweed processing into high-value raw materials for the creative design sector, thereby establishing a complete industrial chain that extends from biorefining to end-consumer products.
The two companies stated that this material offers designers a new option that balances sustainability with excellent processability, holding the promise of driving the large-scale adoption of eco-friendly materials in the creative industries.
